let's face it, the moment he decided to leave it was in everyone's best interest that he do so immediately. why would you want an unhappy warrior hanging around with the team?

A lot of guys are real close with Phil, but LISTEN... Maybe to ease your feelings a little bit.. Many of the guys feel that Austen is the guy. However, Phillip was a work in progress, and has the tools and intangibles to be better than Austen IMO.. give him a year of PT somewhere, and the next 2 are money.
I hear ya 33... but at this point does any of this matter... He is gone... Does saying this stuff make any difference?

I agree 100% with everything 33 has said.

And yes we have alot of athletes on this team and they all have good athlete type stats, but I truley believe PB is the best ahtlete when combining them all and then add to that a pysique that I have NEVER seen on a QB.

I wish him luck and will cheer for him wherever he goes. He's out for spite now to prove he can play QB and believe me spite is a very very strong motivator.

And as someone used your workplace as an example: You bust your butt, do a good job, feel you perform better than someone who got promoted over you, are you gonna stay in that job or are you gonna look for greener pastures? I know I looked and found greener pastures.

I thought he should have been given a shot in the 3rd quarter of the kansas game to see if he could give us a spark...

but to up and quit and not even wait it out for the rest of the year is tough to swallow i thought maybe he would switch to another position next year

Best of luck on your travels

But we had two plays where the players needed just to get the first downs to stop KU's momentum. Instead they tried to make big plays (inexperience), and came up short.

I liked Bates, and what he brought to the table. It was clear the coaches made their minds up, and he needed to accept it. I am sorry that it didn't go your way. But life isn't always fair (and I am not one to say stuff like that), and if you approach it right, learn from it, it will make you stronger.

33, you said it's hard to face Chizik, what does that mean?

Off the top, very first thing I want to do is thank Bates for what little time he has had here. He gave us Cyclone fans one of the greatest memories last season against Iowa that all of us Cyclone football fans will always remember.

Second, overall I'm not really all that surprised that Bates left. Somewhat surprised that he's leaving in the middle of the season, but not surprised that he left. He obviously desperately wants to be a QB, and due to Arnaud's performance so far this season wasn't going to get that opportunity here. And for those saying that Bates hasn't gotten his chance, sure he has - first three games of the season. Arnaud obviously proved in those first three games that he was going to be a better QB than Bates. What was the coaching staff supposed to do? Continue to have them split time until Bates finally beat out Arnaud, if he was ever going to be able to do that? That's counterproductive for two reasons - 1. Splitting time was really hurting the chemistry on the offense, as either you would squash the momentum Arnaud was building by switching them out after they had some momentum builiding, or you would hurt Arnaud's confidence becaues he knew he was going to be replaced for making the slightest mistake - and 2. Is it really fair to Arnaud to continue this charade of a "competition" when through 5 games and countless practices Bates has had his chance yet Arnaud has proved in that time that he is the better QB?

Finally, which contending school does Bates think he's going to transfer to that's going to let him play QB? As it was, we were the only BCS school that even gave him the chance to compete for QB. Everyone else wants him at another position. We let him compete here and he couldn't even make it here. The only BCS school that's even going to give him a look is a desperate, non-competing team (a team worse than Iowa State) or a mid-major or small school. And what happens the first year he's eligible at that school he gets beat out again? Is he going to transfer again? If the guy has any pro aspirations, he's killing them by the day.

I dont think Bueker is ready, He doesnt fit the game plan. IF AA goes down, For a SUBSTANTIAL amount of time, We throw Tiller in there and cut losses, If its a short term injury, i see Bueker going in and us emphasising a lot of rushing game, and basic drop back passing.

That is a strange question. Is this really a big concern? He's over a thousand miles away, its not like he has the pulse of the team or any inside info.

I definitely think this is a big concern considering TheCity specifically mentioned Bates as a guy Darrius liked on his first visit. He specifically stated he didn't want Bates to leave. This could directly effect Darrius' decision. How is this not a concern?
I for one live in the present, not the past. Bates is gone, that's old news, but how does his departure effect the future?

Yes, you're right. Never should have been a quarterback.

Since when is the best athlete at quarterback?

I could see Bates slipping in at Illinois and taking over for Juice Williams after he is gone. But thats just off of the top of my head.

Other than...

1. Help with recruiting
2. Pushing Arnaud to excel at QB
3. We would be screwed if Arnaud got hurt

...this does not affect our team that much. In fact, ending the QB "controversy" could help the team. There is no way for us to know.

Bates did not touch the field on Saturday, and we lost to KU by 2.

The program is bigger than one player, especially one that hardly plays.

We lost some "potential" help/production from Bates, but we're not losing anything that we already have/use.

i see where you're coming from with this, but listening to gc after last weeks game, his exact quote was "i want to win now. not next year, not in 2 years, right now." imo aa gives us the best chance to win "now". i think you may be right about the "potential" of the 2, but right now aa is clearly the guy.

He's out for spite now to prove he can play QB and believe me spite is a very very strong motivator.

Only in the movies. It's also good for turning people into bitter, emotional wrecks. If spite is his only motivation, it will not end well for him...

I just don't get where you see better intangibles from PB than AA? AA is clearly the leader of the offense. And I don't think PB will ever throw the ball anywhere near as well as AA.

33-any word on how arnaud is handling the news? how tight were he and pb? will this mean more pressure for him, or will it help him in the sense that he doesn't have to keep looking over his shoulder?

Interesting wording on www.cyclones.com

"Bates Quits Football Team"

I guess it is true, but I expected "transfer" or "leaving football team". I'm guessing this isn't sitting well with the coaches/team.

Obviously I do not know the kid, but quitting like this isn't good and all parties are probably better off that he is leaving. Hopefully he matures and finds a good opportunity someplace else. The football team can now focus on the players left and not have to worry about sroking Bates' ego.
