I'll be serious....I'm obviously one who worries a lot about Hoiberg leaving for the NBA sooner than I would hope. Anyway, I finally figured out why it worries me so much. Because if you talk about replacements for Hoiberg, I am pretty sure that no name would make me feel good about things. You could tell me that Coach K assisted by Izzo, Phil Jackson, and Greg Popovich would be coachign at Iowa State and I'd STILL be ****** Fred was gone.

3 wishes where one wish could be used to wish for unlimited wishes.

If I had one wish that I could wish this holiday season, it would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.

If I had two wishes that I could wish for this holiday season, the first would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing in the spirit of harmony and peace.. and the second would be for $30 million a month to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account.

You know, if I had three wishes that I could make this holiday season, first, of course, would be for all the children to get together and sing.. the second would be for the $30 million every month to me.. and the third would be for all encompassing power over every living being thing in the entire universe.

And if I had four wishes that I could make this holiday season, first would be the crap about the kids.. second would be for the $30 million.. the third would be for all the power.. and the fourth would be to set aside one month each year for an extended 31-day orgasm, to be brought about slowly by Rosanna Arquette and that model Paulina somebody, I can't think of her name, of course my lovely wife could come, too. She's behind me 100% on this, I guarantee you.

Wait a minute, maybe that sex thing should be the first wish! So, if I made that the first wish, because, you know, it could all go boom tomorrow, and then what have you got? No, no.. the kids singing would be great, that would be nice. No, no, who am I kidding! I mean, theyu're not gonna be able to get all those kids together! I mean, the logistics of the thing is impossible! It's more trouble than it's worth! So, we reorganize: here we go. First, the sex - we go with that; second, the money. No! We go with the power second, then the money, and then the kids. Oh, wait, oh geez! I forgot about revenge against my enemies! Okay.. revenge against all my enemies, they should die like pigs in Hell! That would be the fourth wish! And of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing in the spirit of peace and harmony.

Thank you, everybody. (Steve Martin)

Not so sure Fred is so eager to go to the NBA. Remember that Fred is pretty close to our former coach Tim Floyd. Tim Floyd went to the Bulls. Ask Tim Floyd how that worked out.

Fred is building something very special at ISU. Fred is raising a family and making a lot of money. He is loved by Cyclone Nation. If Fred does leave ISU for the NBA then it is something he has dreamed about doing. IMO, Fred is where he wants to be. And he plans to keep on building on his success to hopefully bring a national title to ISU. IMO, THAT is Fred's dream. Not the NBA.

I've had numerous conversations with others about this over the past few months. I think you are spot on with your analysis. Fred is building a program. A program for longevity. He has the opportunity to be the King of Iowa if he stays at ISU. Forget the Mayor, King Fred has a nice ring to it. His legacy is already set but he could enhance it by coaching in Ames for a very long time, a la Coach K and Jim Boeheim.

The one thing that I consider is why would he go? What could entice him? He doesn't NEED the money, he made plenty in the NBA and college coaches salaries stack up well against NBA coaches. He doesn't have an ego need to move up. Fred doesn't strike me as the type of guy seeking out the limelight for his own gain. He does the radio shows and TV spots to increase the spotlight on ISU, not him.

So for the life of me, I can't figure out why he would want to go. Anyone else have any ideas?

Agree. Fred is an exceptional person. He is a GIVER....not a Taker. Which is why players want to play for him. And a Big Reason why he is successful. We are fortunate to have such a classy great person as the ISU BB Coach.

CPR is the same type of individual. As well as Coach Fenelly. These guys have a genuine love for ISU. And the Cyclone Nation reciprocates those feelings. Being appreciated for the hard work and dedication they have is more important to our coaches than money. We need to compensate them well for their efforts. At the same time, our coaches are much, much more than this being about the money. And the money thing and pros can be a very temporary thing. Ask Tim Floyd. He is now at UTEP. Ask Earle Bruce. He now says the biggest mistake he ever made was leaving ISU for what he thought was his "dream job" at Ohio State. Iowa State is a special place. Our coaches know that. Our Players know that. It is "Family".

The other piece of this that I forgot to mention is that I view Fred as a teacher first and foremost. He seems to really enjoy the teaching aspect of coaching. I don't think that happens in the NBA. Plus having to deal with NBA players and their egos and shenanigans (yes, I just used that word... GET OFF MY LAWN!) as opposed to the 20 year old college-types is vastly different. I am all too aware that college kids are no walk in the park and they have egos but they pale in comparison to the prima donna's in the NBA.

I just don't see the draw to the NBA for someone like Fred.

There are a ton of college coaches who tried the NBA and came back to college... no one has mentioned Rick Pitino yet.

In response to the OP... I wouldn't trade Fred for anything at this point. I think his upside potential is limitless and it would be the equivalent of cashing out on Microsoft right after the IPO. Gotta think long game on someone like Fred!
