top-load vs front-load

Seems to me like you fixed your own problem...use more soap. Hard to get clothes clean and smelling good if they are just rolling around in water.

Yeah, would make sense. But we have soft water and this HE front load. My wife was using soap like it was a top load and hard water. We found that the original cause of smells in our clothes was that the soap was never getting rinsed completely out because of the low water amount combined with the amount of soap used. Believe me, we have tried every possible combination you can find on front loads.

Don't know where you heard that. Kenmore washers and dryers are made by Whirlpool to Kenmore specs. Electrolux MIGHT make one small european style model for Kenmore but that is all. I also don't think they have anything to do with LG.
Here is a great site to find out who made your appliance, Appliance411 The Purchase: Who makes Sears Kenmore?

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I knew we wouldn't get a definitive answer on this because everybody has had good and bad experiences. Many people think the front loads clean better because the clothes aren't sitting in their own filthy water. Others say the top loads are better because they use more water.

I finally took the time to go through the manual and found what to clean and how often. They recommend cleaning out the filter in the front once a month and drain the water, which it has both items easily accessed next to each other. Well, found out my wife has only done this once in the past 7 years. (She's a complete neat freak, so I assumed she was taking care of that.) Can you guess where the smell was coming from? I would post a pic, but I think you get the idea. I've now bleach-soaked the filter, cleaned the rubber ring around the door and drained the old water. I ran it through a sanitize cycle with only bleach in there, and I think we have solved that issue. I couldn't see anything that looked like black mold, which I thought for sure was the issue.

Anyway, hopefully I've resolved that and I can sell this set with piece of mind and get the top of the line Samsung front load washer with touch screen input, (although my wife isn't sold on the touch screen. I love the ability to run a second cycle from my smartphone, but I like toys.) And then maybe maintain it the way it says to...

Are different appliances contracted differently? We'd been looking at fridges, and Kenmore fridges are clones to LG fridges.

Our fridge from April 2012 is an LG from Home Depot and has a Kenmore clone that is pricier.

Our set of washer and dryers from Oct 2012 are Kenmore from Sears and have a LG clone that is pricier.

If you look around, you will find out what stores have the Kenmore clones.

Make sure to also keep the energy star rebate in mind when looking. We got a $100 back from MidAmerican.

We are going to replace our 7 year old LG front-load and wondering if anybody has bought a new high-end washer lately. We are looking at LG, Kenmore Elite, made by LG, Whirpool Duet and Samsung. Sears recommends Kenmore, surprise. Lowe's recommends Samsung. I want the best at cleaning work out clothes and won't smell musty when wet, (problem with front-loads of the past)

wife and i bought a samsung front loader with pedestals. Have zero complaints about it what so ever. Gets everything clean, doesn't smell at all

This.

Also, I've found Sears pricing to not be that great. We bought from appliancesconnection.com and saved over $800 from Sears on washer/dryer set.

Most salespeople there, carry those ipads around, and they can tell you for the next couple months, when it will be the cheapest. We waited for the correct promotion and bought it then. Saved a few hundred over HD's cost.
It does fluctuate quite a bit though.

Just a note for others since we are on the topic. We found out that Lowe's will match other stores' prices, which I didn't know. I assume that they won't match the online prices, but I'm going to check. Good to know that somebody has bought a large item on a .com and it worked out. I know that we can save some coin that way. Also, Lowes' protection plan was much cheaper than Sears'. Lowe's was something like $300 or less to cover both appliances for five years. Sears was like $60/year/appliance.

a little FYI, if you are going front load washers, Lowe's puts their pedastals on sale about every other month. I think it was by one get one so its worth waiting around and watching for a sale

This is as confusing as the Dish vs. Direct threads. I was planning on going front-load but now I'm not so sure.

Got a front load HE fridgidaire, love it. We have never had a smell problem because we leave the door wide open to let the moisture out. Had a top loader fisher and paykel, it broke and to fix it was around 900.00 bucks, but did not really like it anyway.

I went to Lowes last summer to buy a grill, and they wouldn't even match their own online price.

Amazing, I've had a front load washer for seven years and never had a smell problem, moisture problem, or any other problems.

As for smell, mine has a cycle where you dump a cup of bleach directly in the bin, push the start button and it runs and sanitizes the machine. I never have to leave the door open or anything like that. The only other thing I do it drain the excess water out every few weeks, and rinse out where the soap / fabric softener go and that's it.

Me either. Hate to be a jerk but in my experience a very significant number of appliance problems are user error from not reading the manual. Mine says you will not develop mold if you leave the door open between uses. So I leave the door open and guess what? No mold. It also says if you don't properly install and level it and change hoses every 4-5 years, it will flood your house. So I properly installed and leveled and change hoses every 4-5 years and guess what? No floods.
