Aerosmiths first album was in the 1973. Exactly how could they ''sell out'' when they had nothing before the 70's. Come on.

Yes. I meant "post 1980" Aerosmith.

Basically everything from the Run DMC collaboration (which was good, but clearly all about selling records) on.

I think they put out some albums in the earlier 80s when they were super coked out that just sucked, but weren't necessarily "selling out".

Al could have interchanged "after the 70s" with "once they stopped doing heroin." Same thing, and was the same point of downfall.

I don't know if I'd put Sledgehammer in there...

I'd add
Van Halen "Jump"
Cheap Trick "The Flame"
Everything Aerosmith put out after the 70s.

I agree re: Sledgehammer. The album "So" is one of the best albums of all time containing a wide diversity of styles. Sledgehammer was his tribute to the Motown sound he grew up with. It was a very creative song with Gabriel's usual multiple layers of complex rhythms and instruments. His follow-up "Passion" is the bench mark for making people aware of world music. (And also one of the best make-out albums of all time.)

Given that "Born In The USA" came after, "Nebraska" and "The River", I'd say that's a clear shift. Maybe it's just that BITUSA was sooooo overplayed in '84 that I'm still sick of it!

The worst part of BITUSA was the misinterpretation of the title song! Patriotic? Ugh...listen to the entire song why don't you? (not directed at anyone on this site) Anyway, when you listen to the "Nebraska" version of BITUSA (song not album) it is very clear that Springsteen was conflicted about which direction to take. The "Nebraska" version of BITUSA is incredible!

Jackson Browne needs to be on this list. Not as well known artist wise, but listen to"Running on Empty" and then listen to "Lawyers in Love". I love me some Jackson Browne but his 80s stuff was garbage.

This whole arguement can apply to almost anyone who was great in the seventies, and made it to the eighties. Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, and even Rush put out some crap in the 80s, although they are Rush, and still pretty awesome.

Some truth there...but then "Somebody's Baby", "For A Rocker" and "Shape of a Heart" are very good 80s songs...hard to live up to the greatness of "Running on Empty"...that is one of the all-time great songs!

I disagree with that being the worse part. If Bruce had done the song in the tone and the gritty style that he originally wrote it - like he performed it during the Reunion Tour of 1999 - 2000, there would have been no misinterpretation. Instead, either he or Landau decided to make it into an upbeat pop song that was on the radio 5 times an hour.

BITUSA was never a track on Nebraska

Don't most punksters think Green Day is the biggest sell out?

Got to be the worst for Punk bands to sellout. "Ok I'll take your bloody cash and live a nice comfortable life. BUT I'M STILL P*****D!:realmad:

RHCP's Mother's Milk in '89 was a clear shift for the band. However, they wouldn't have had the staying power they attained if they would have stayed with the Uplift Mofo and Freaky Styley sound.
So, selling out usually means staying together instead of being that band who had a few great indie albums that sold a 5 thousand copies. Jane's addiction best album was their live XXX recording, but I'm glad they "sold out" and made Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual. After that, not so much.

Half of BITUSA was recorded during the Nebraska sessions...including BITUSA. The version of BITUSA released in 1984 was the second take of the song by the full band way back in 1982! All of the songs on Nebraska were written for the full-band treatment...but Bruce didn't think they captured the tone correctly and convinced the label to let him release the "demos" of the songs as an album...and yes, Landau convinced him to keep BITUSA off of Nebraska thinking of a bigger payday down the road. But that song we hear on the radio was recorded when the band was trying to play the Nebraska songs "electrically". There are rumors out there that Bruce might one day release the "full-band" version of Nebraska but I just can't see that happening! Check out the Tracks version of BITUSA if you haven't already...that is where the Reunion Tour version came from...and I agree...it is AWESOME!

As for Landau...many many of his decisions make me wonder why Bruce trusts him so much???

Don't know how all that would sound, but the full band version of "Atlantic City' is one of my favorites.

You would have to admit though, the line, "I'm a cool rocking daddy in the USA" is a little "sell out-ish" to that song!

Agree...but he did say it in "Reunion" version too...and it was awesome...the Live in NYC cd cut of that is great! Love it when he breaks into the "I'm 10 year, 15 years, 25 years burning down the road..."

Yeah..."Atlantic City" live is great! Have you ever downloaded from the mp3 site that has all the boots uploaded? Free! Great resource for any Springsteen fan!

I have the full concert boots from the last two I was at in 2009 - Des Moines and St. Louis. There are parts in the DSM concert that get annoying because some girl is making an ungodly noise repeatedly - can't even describe it. If she was standing next to me at the concert......

Just listened to the end of the Live in NYC BITUSA track - he says long gone daddy, not cool rocking - unless I missed it

I went to three of those Reunion concerts BTW - 2 in Philly, 1 in State College, PA (Penn State Campus)

How about that appearance of "Incident on 57th Street" leading into "Rosilita" in DSM?!?! There were a lot of jealous people across the globe on that one!!

Also, Metallica didn't ''sell out'' until Load was released. The black album was the band taking a different direction (maturing as song writers and as people) and expressing it. They sold out when they started releasing songs like ''Unforgiven 2'' just to capitalize on one of there best songs(Unforgiven).

I love the black Album but that was a total sell out album. They made a video "One" which they said they would never ever do. They released like 5 songs off it. Now that I have said that I want to say that I loved the album and still do. However "Kill Em All, Ride The lightining, Garage Days, and Master of puppets is nothing like the Black Album.
I am a huge Metal head and 10 out of 10 of us will tell you that the black album was the sell out point in there career. 9 out of 10 of us like it.

I know...27 years or so since it had been performed that way and it shows up like that in DSM! Incredible! Loved the inclusion of "Satisfaction" and "The Wanderer" as well...ah...great times!

That was the last time I saw the Big Man...sad!

Said by the guy who poses as an Iowa State fan. Classic.

P.S.
Did the restraining order I took out against you expire? You haven't stalked me for awhile.

Hey, i'll give you one thing - nothing ever gets by you.

Also, quite the sleuth.

Little wonder you decided to take your talents to paralegal school. Give Sally all my best.

very interesting reading your critique of music that was produced prior to your conception. but enough of my critique of you - please, carry on!

and, once you get your paralegal degree, I suppose you can carry out your own FED on me and get me evicted from this website.

Looks like I riled up the Karate Kid.

Not sure how I ever rubbed you raw, but your obsession with following me around and trying to take personal shots is pretty funny. It takes a man's man to hide behind anonymity.

Keep fighting the good fight, you noble prince.
