Took Orr Five Years to Win 20

The expectations of winning in the Big 12 and competing on a national level right away were laid by Jamie Pollard when he hired Mac. It's in his press conference. Again winning now is also stated as winning in year three of the program. They year everyone pointed to because every where Mac went year three was the year he turned it around and if he didn't do it this year we should be worried.

I'm just saying, show me one thing that points to us turning this around, one thing that might make me consider rethinking my opinion of the hire

I guess we have to give him 5 years now....since it took Orr 5. :skeptical:

I liked the post. GMcD will be here until at LEAST the end of next season. Next season I can almost guarantee improvement. Gilstrap sounds like a great player, we bring in another good point guard, and one of our redshirted "big" guys will be able to help out. DG and CB will be in their 3rd season of playing. Experience will be key! That is something that we have not had for a long time, and we need to see how GMcD's teams will play with experience. I have a feeling the difference will be drastic.

Also, GMcD is doing a good job of getting some good recruits lately... I hope we let him stick it out until they are here.

Of course if CB and DG transfer because we finish 11-17 it will be considered Mac's 1st year again.

Redskinsisu did a good job on the Orr history but for one thing, you can't talk about years 3 - 6 and not mention Jeff Hornacek. In my opinion he was the key. He made all the other players better and once he was gone Orr never had another guard that could run the team as well as he did.

good point however hoiberg was too bad either although he was kind of a small forward, shooting guard mister layup him self

Lucca played last year!?

Saying things like that will only undermine any visage of credibility you tried to portray.

that... was the point. It was a joke.

Was probably too subtle, but it was a compliment to McD. I feel like I've been way too hard on him, and I really do respect and like him as a man, and I think the way he stuck with Lucca and fought for the kid is one of the most commendable things he's done. The fact that our German Chick Magnet is even on the court this year (you know, making him a markedly improved player) is a credit to this staff.

Wow, Orr totally showed improvement each year.

Exactly. And there's one of the two big differences between the two situations. Orr got better every year, not the opposite. He showed that the program was moving in the right direction. Also, when Orr got here there was no expectation of winning. No one could win at Iowa State, let alone win right away. No one at Iowa State had a clue what a good program looked like. Now, we've been there. We've been deep in the tournament, and we've got our Phantom National Championship hanging in the rafters. When Johnny got here, it was good enough to get to .500, because that was better than what we'd done. Now, .500 isn't good enough.

How many players bailed when Orr was hired. As many as eight?

. . . Just another dividing point between fan factions.

No one needed to bail. His cupboard was bare. Orr would have loved to have the talent on his team that McD had in his first year.

Good post to start this thread.

I gotta say though...I've yet to see headway under GMAC as well. I really want the guy to succeed, but I can't find any progress at this point.

He has some more decent recruits coming in so as I said in another post, if we aren't winning in 2 more years, I'm gonna know what is wrong without a doubt and it's the man leading the team.

Having said that, I will reiterate that I really, REALLY want GMAC to succeed so we can stop the revolving coach door in our Men's BBall program.

Let's give him the five years that were offered to him in his contract. Last night's game was a huge bummer, but I still think GM can get the job done. If not, after five, then it's time to move on.

Blalock left for big money... Michael Taylor supports GMAC because he taught him a lesson at the expense of winning ball games-- remember that....

Johnny Orr was the most popular ISU coach, certainly no where near the most successful. Five years of the type of basketball that is being produced right now would be a disaster. Basketball should not be compared to football as far as "allowing the coach 4 or 5 years to get his players". If a coach is a good recruiter in BB, there should be nearly instant results within a year or maybe two. Get one or two great players and with a great coach we should contend. Case in point, Dedric Willougby, Kelvin Cato and Tim Floyd. Gmac is simply not recruiting Big 12 type players and I'm not sold on his style of play either.

It's Johnny freaking Orr. Not a fair comparison. Write up one up using Floyd, Eustachy, or even Morgan.

On second thought, don't do that. :nah:

Did Johnny lose to South Dakota State, a true 17 point underdog, at home? Probably not in his ISU coaching career. How about Hawaii, a #229 team, on the road. Maybe. Maybe not. We are losing to teams we should be able to wipe the floor with. Instead we bounce around uintil we loose in the end. And we failed to score 60 points again. This is noit comforting news. Goodbye post season for sure.
We would have won if they would move their feet, hit their shots, play big inside, and play with heart we probably would be undefeated.

not excited about GMAC hire at this point, but it isn't time for him to be canned.

The comparison to Orr just doesn't do it for me. I sat through Lynn Nance's last year and Orr's first. Orr provided instant credibility to the program. He was a celebrity coming to ISU from UM and the team was much more competitive from day one too.

I'm with you on this. I REALLY want him to do well, but this is frustrating. I hope we see improvement by the end of the year and can look to next year with hope. We have some talent. Let's get some decent Big XII wins this year.
