Wow, really? I was watching the ticker last night, and all of the big schools-urban and suburban are closed today due to the cold, not bad weather just the cold. WHAT??????????

People are becoming soft. I listened to the Ankeny Superintendent last night and he gave a very politically correct protect-put everyone in a plastic bubble answer. Guess what, probably 80% of the small rural schools are open today (with a typical 2 hr delay) even in northern Iowa where it is 10-15 degrees colder than Des Moines.

When semis are stalling on the highways because of the temps, I think it is better to error on the side of caution. Imagine if that was a bus load of kids.

Yeah, people will complain that their kids don't have to go to school because of "a little cold", but once something bad happens, they'll do a 180 and say "well what'd you make them go to school for!" Like jay moe said, better to err on the side of caution.

My sis is a teacher in Des Moines and she said some of it may be to save money. Think about how much money it would take to heat those buildings on days like today.

It was cold, but my god!!!! Put on some clothes and its really not that nad

Are you ******* serious? What do you mean it’s really not that bad? We are at near record lows in Central Iowa, with a lot of cities across Iowa today reaching RECORD LOWS! That means that it has never been this cold since records have been kept for weather. I would consider that beyond bad!

I had to be out in it for several hours last night -16 in southern Iowa with a bit of wind, you bundle up it is all you can do. I couldn't get inside just out of the wind at times.

In 1996, the kids in Des Moines went to school and it was a hell of a lot colder than this. From late January to early Feb, 1996 it never got got above zero (5 to 6 days in a row), in fact the coldest morning was something like -26 or so in Des Moines -35 in the Central Iowa, with the other mornings roughly as cold if not colder than last night-they went to school!!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely can understand ice or a heavy snow or if the roads are still really really bad, but many are dry. According to the ticker, they were going to School in Algona and other points up north. If we had a long streak of cold like 96 (can still happen this winter) don't plan on taking a vacation until July, the kids won't be out of school until then.

I thought they said on the news last night that today was going to be the coldest day in 16 years?

Well, generally I'm in the "blame the pansy genereation" boat, but it was cold enough that my brake pads were frozen onto my rotors this morning, completely disabling my car for a time. That's cold. I sure don't want my 5 year old out in that.
