I can't remember the last coaching move in this state was this odd and mysterious. OC to big time OC job? Obviously makes sense. OC to HC of a minor program? Good for him. OC to QB babysitter for a sanctioned Big Ten school not exactly marked by its offensive wizardry? Weird.

I'm sure he'll do fine, and maybe he's a restless guy and wants to audition for his big close-up - but...still. It is odd.

Sure, you can look in the tea leaves and wonder if Herman couldn't have squeezed out a half-touchdown average from this team (by, whatever, starting Barnett, starting White, calling different plays, etc.) but it isn't like this offense is clearly and obviously a wreck. I could easily see this offense make a 7-point leap next year with the same plays and better hands, for example.

Just a straight up, plain old goofy career move. The redeeming factor is that, long term, it seems like a good move to have a pro relationship with Meyer.

However, Cael Sanderson probably thought it was good to be connected with JoPa, too. Tressel is sort of poison right now, when, last year at about this time, he was untouchable. Hitching up to the "Who You Know" wagon is a mixed bag.

I still don't trust that Urban Meyer's struggles with anxiety aren't going to blow up in an ugly way again. I mean, he's not necessarily going to go Schnellenberger on OSU right now, but he doesn't exactly inspire confidence, either.

Here, some Buckeye fans dismiss their former QB coach as a "video editor," again indicating that this position is really pretty low on the totem (to be fair, it is contrasted against Urban being serious about the coaching staff, but, yikes. Still not a sweetheart spot on the bench to occupy.)

Also, an interesting quote from Herman:

Herman’s big on preaching to his players about trying to win “the double positive,â€￾ he explains of his biggest stat barometer.

“If you win the turnover battle and the ‘explosive’ game, stats say you win the game 97 percent of the time. We preach that to our kids daily. I think I read a study a few years ago about it and it’s certainly held up in all of my years as a coordinator.
Based on that metric, it is a miracle we won 50% of our games. I'm sure he'll be hoping to do a little better than trail the nation in turnover margin, at least due to QB error...

This one doesn't devastate me. I haven't been thrilled with the offense over the last three years. Didn't hate it. Didn't love it.

In my uneducated opinion, replaceable.

He is an offensive coach and will want to learn under a great offensive mind. Urban Meyer provides that. Paul Rhoads is a defensive guy. Obvious to say yes to Urban Meyer on this one
Especially if your new contract at ISU is missing or weak.

Agree - this is where I am: I thought he had his best opportunity next year with a QB/Center combo with a year in the system and better hands at receiver, but I also have no idea if he'd pull it off or not.

I like the jet concept a ton, and some of the plays have been spectacular, but on the other hand, there were plenty of 3 and outs and red zone disappoinments.

I think replaceable, too. I'm just baffled by the move, but again, I'd be skittish about Meyer's mental constitution - something I've got no doubt about regarding Rhoads.

My uneducated opinion is the same. Glad for what he's done, happy for him to have this opportunity, trusting that CPR has a strong winning solution ready to go.

I have faith in CPR, he hasn't let me down yet.

Which no one has confirmed. What's the status of Wally's contract? No one (to my knowledge) has hard evidence regarding staff contracts right now.

Do you?

There is no way we don't keep Wally until retirement unless he chooses to leave, and I think allowing him to coach with his son is a big plus for him.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

Between the guy saying Steele will be transferring and the guys saying Herman was being let go I've had enough of people not in the know preaching their gospel. I can guarentee CPR would not have been demoting/firing Herman.

Point is, nobody will believe you if you don't come up with more than "a source". I have known multiple people at ISU who tell me they have "sources" and it ends up being some equipment manager in his first year at ISU or towel boy who think they know what's going on.

Reading between the lines and hearing what Herman said and how he said things on the radio a couple of times I do not doubt this. Have we had confirmation of a quote from Ben Bruns at the Tech game talking about CPR yelling at Herman to run the ball. CPR has voiced his displeasure in the last year regarding the offensive production. With the OL this year and playmakers at RB (all the way to 4th string) I am shocked there were not better offensive #'s in Ames this year.

I don't really care if anyone believes me. The good news is Herman was still recruiting for ISU last week, even though he has know for a couple weeks that he was out.
