Maybe I should have mentioned that we were at a buffet, where all the waitress had to do was refill drinks. I think you should automatically dial down your tip at a buffet because they don't have to take your order or bring you your food, which is like 50 percent or more of what they have to do.

I am a pretty heavy tipper. A minimum 20% on the whole bill unless the service was horrendous, in which case I leave 1 dollar.

Good service at a "regular" priced restaurant will generally be a 30-40% tip, while good service at a little more upscale place and I'll generally leave 20%. I've been known to tip 100% (or more) for really outstanding service.

I figure that the prices at the upscale places take into account an expectation of better service, so I take that into account somewhat.

If I get upscale service at a downscale restaurant, the server should be rewarded.

Bartenders get 1.50-2 bucks a drink regardless (though I try to pay just 5 bucks a drink total for most beer, and 7.50 total for most mixed drinks). I also tend to tip better in Iowa (especially rural Iowa), since I know there are so many cheapskates around :biglaugh:
Look at Daddy Warbucks here.

I've got a question about tipping too. I took a bunch of people to dinner the other day. There were 7 of us and one infant. The total bill was about $87, which I paid because no one else had any money (I knew this before hand so it's not like I was stuck with a surprise bill).

As we were getting up to leave, I threw a $10 bill on the table for a tip. I generally try to leave 15 percent, (about $13 in this case) but I've never had a bill quite that high and I figured $10 was good enough.

Anyway, one of the younger people in my party, she was about 18, looked at me like I was nuts for leaving 10 dollars. "You aren't giving THAT much, are you?" she asked.

I told her that it was not as much as I normally give, percentage-wise, and there are seven people in our party. Some agreed with me that it wasn't really a big tip for the table and some disagreed. What does everyone else think? Did I tip too much, not enough or just about right?

Maybe I should have mentioned that we were at a buffet, where all the waitress had to do was refill drinks. I think you should automatically dial down your tip at a buffet because they don't have to take your order or bring you your food, which is like 50 percent or more of what they have to do.

that makes more sense.

that actually couldnt be further from the truth. in places i have worked in the past, the delivery drivers always make under minimum wage.

as for the delivery charge, that is charged because the owners of such establishments have to pay for the gas and repair bills on their delivery cars.

in fact if anything, you should tip the delivery driver more than you tip your waitress and no i do not deliver food!

or if the driver actually has his own car and gets typically half of the delivery charge he still has to pay for his own gas. going back and forth through in town traffic really makes for a hefty gas bill and typically that $0.50 they get of those delivery charges do not cover their gas and when they are only making around $5 and hour in the first place it is really not cool to not tip your driver....

This must vary regionally, because I've seen many ads for Drivers in Ames and Des Moines that advertise well above minimum wage. I know making at or around minimum wage isn't great, but there are plenty of people doing it in the US who don't get any tips.

That makes a difference definitely. At a buffet where they only get you drinks I'll usually leave $1-2 per person, maybe a bit more if they're on the ball, less if not.

Yeah I'd say a buffet is a completely different situation.

Since it seems we're having an all-encompassing tipping discussion here, I have another question. How many of you tip at deli/ice cream places where they prepare your food at the counter? I'm always unsure what to do at these type of places.

A lot of times the hot ones are the ones who do the crappiest job. They think they are all that and are going to get a tip no matter what.

Thanks for perpetuating the crappy service from hot waitresses...
If there's cleavage in my face she can wipe her *** with my bread and I'd tip 13% at least.

If you have to ask...then yeah, you should go ahead and tip at Sonic. And I mean that personally...just you.

:biglaugh:

20% for good service.

Haircuts -- if it is the owner who cuts your hair, you do not tip since it is their shop. I've read this before and even asked my barber, who confirmed this is correct.

Guys - turn in your man cards if you're over 18 and still going to Great Clips, Cost Cutters, etc. Find a good ole' fashioned barbershop! For those of us who work in downtown Des Moines, this is easy as there are four or five to choose from. Maybe this is more difficult for others depending on where they live/work.

Finally, tip your pizza delivery guys! If you don't, get your butt off the couch and order it as carry out.

As for the Pizza guy, do you tip less if they're driving a company car and not their own? I mean if it is their own, they've got additional cost associated with maintenence and repair.

I keep meaning to go to Monty's, but I'm a creature of habit. :dull:

Thanks, but I don't need a flattop or the standard mullet.
