The Speed on Iowa State

The recent recruitment of Re-al and Porter peaked my interest into track times and speed. Since I apparently didn't have anything else to do this morning, decided to take a look at (some of) the guys on the roster with track results.

Most data was compiled with a quick google search. The track times were gathered from their cyclone profile, high school record books or a reported time. The forty yard dashes were reported from news articles. The MPH calculation by taking (distance/time)*2.237

If anyone has reported numbers on other players, I will gladly make a live document and include them.

A big takeaway I got is their formula for athletes is real. The WRs are 6'3" and fast or 5'9 and really fast. I think the roles for Kene, Lang are going to be more "positionless" then just a RB.

Disclaimer: Obviously speed isn't everything (although it is super nice) and they are not timed in pads. Some guys play much faster then their times and some much slower. For a WR, beating press and getting to top speed is great. Same with locating and sitting in an open part of the zone.

This is not a list of determining the best guys but a list I found mildly interesting.

Darien Porter has clocked 21.80 in the 200 this year. Was early in the year too, I assume he will eclipse that. He also ran a 46.60 (!!) split in the 4x400 at the Drake Relays. The kid can fly.

Landen Akers was also a speedster on the track. He went in the mid 22's in the 200 and went 49.87 in the 400.

Damn Porter sub 22 is something. I know Porter is thin right now, but his ceiling from an athletic standpoint is really really high. That dude burns.

Interesting information. Warren's speed surprises me a little. I knew he was fast. It's a pity that the OL run blocking has been so poor the last couple years, as Mike really needs to have a hole to make something happen. Lots of good speed guys now all ISU needs to do is get them the ball in space.

Like you said, speed doesn't always transition to success on the football field but this group in 2-3 years doesn't look awful.

QB - Mitchell
RB - Nwangu
WR - Scates
WR - Porter
WR - Milton
TE - Allen

Cant imagine youd find more elite track type speed anywhere in the country.

I wouldn't trust anything not electronically timed. 40s on Rivals are almost always off by quite a bit.

You can pretty much ignore 40 times with the context above. Included because they popped up.

Also did not pull data from recruiting sites like rivals, ESPN or 247. Pulled from their ISU page, school records or as reported their local newspaper.

A few years ago, I was quite jealous of West Virginia and Baylor who seemed to have such good team speed. Now, it is us with the good team speed.

A few years ago, I was quite jealous of West Virginia and Baylor who seemed to have such good team speed. Now, it is us with the good team speed.

I wanted to bring up the Baylor parallels, but the stigma is so bad, people might flip just seeing "Baylor". It's no secret teams go after speed but Baylor, Oregon and WVU might be most known for that. We're also talking about 3 of the best "Spread to Run" coaches in Rich Rod, Chip Kelly and Briles. This could be worthy of a whole series of posts but regarding Briles...

Briles took over Nov of 2007. They didn't have a winning season since 1995 and had won 11 games in 12 years of B12 play. He did not get a ranked win until 2011.

In Briles first class he locked up track star Robert Griffin III (2007 Texas Track Athlete of the Year, USA Today's 2007 All-USA Track and Field). Kendall Wright (QB/CB 3A all state, all state in basketball, Track and Field - Texas 3A long jump title, '08 state record in the triple jump) Terrance Williams was also in this class.

RGIII/Wright were the highest rated guys (24/7 4 star prospects). The rest of the class was low 3s and 2s. Williams = 0.8194. in '09 Josh Gordon = 0.8559. '10 Bryce Petty = 0.8505, etc. Briles was able to identify "good" under recruited guys. (Plus ignored character risks which turned out...not great Bob.)

Baylor_vs_ISU.JPG

If we're playing the comparison game, the overall recruiting has been similar, even though Baylor had an advantage being in Texas and Briles brought players from Houston. Similar to Campbell taking his Ohio guys with him.

Warning : Kool-aid Consumption Below.

I think Iowa State is right with Baylor after 3 years. Montgomery and Butler have the star power to lead this team. This team needs to make a lot of noise to attract the national top end talent like Baylor was doing at the end of Briles' time, but it can succeed with these classes just fine.
