The new Taurus looks like a pretty decent car. When you get down to the brass tacks however, it appears the Fusion is closer in substance to what the Taurus used to represent in the form of a high volume mid sized car. I read somewhere that the Fusion is about the same size as the origional Taurus.

We got the new fusion. Love it. It's just a very nice basic car. Doesn't have the bells and whistles, but very dependable car.

Yesterday I received 3 car magazines. 2 of them reviewed the new Taurus and pretty much hated it. This was the non-SHO version.

As a side note, the new Honda Insight is going to get a terrible review by Consumer Reports in an upcoming mag, which is very rare for CR/Honda.

I don't know about the new Taurus, but I just traded in my 2000 Taurus that had 160,000 miles with no major mechanical failures. Mother-in-law had to pick between a new Taurus or Fusion recently and she settled on the Fusion, mainly because the added size and "luxury" of the Taurus didn't seem to cover the added cost over the Fusion.

Ford has a couple interesting cars coming out soon. There will be a new Taurus SHO coming out soon. Also, there have been talks that the 5.0 litre will be making its return, BUT the car that I am looking forward to the most(and I'm not a Ford fan) is the new V6 twin-turbo Mustang. IIRC, it will have ~350 hp(the 5.0 should be about 400), so with an intake, full exhaust, a boost controller, and a tune, you would OWN the 5.0 and for less money.

People still buy and read magazines???

The looks of it just doesn't do anything for me. It's not like the Fusion which I think is an attractive car to look at.

Ford has basically made two mistakes when it comes to the Taurus:

1. The 1994 redesign that basically made it look like a bug on wheels

2. Killing the brand name in favor for the "Five Hundred".

I like the new Taurus. But for the packaging that I like in a vehicle, I'm not sure I like it for $30,000+. However, it's definitely something I'd consider buying off of the used lots.

I can't believe that this car was ever the best selling car made in the world. This is proof enough that most people have little to no taste in cars or don't care.

Yes, for $8/year I think they are worth it.

It looks like the Taurus is going more upscale to compete with cars like the Lexus GS, Audi A6, etc.

Which I think is a mistake. No one is ever going to equate Ford to that high of a level, I don't care what kind of car they make - that's what the Lincoln brand name is for. They need to be putting their product at the price range of the Nissan Maxima and Toyota Avalon (which they may be doing)

More on the Honda

Consumer Reports blasted the gas-electric hatchback for its "ride quality, handling, interior noise, acceleration, rear-seat, access, and visibility," consigning the hapless Honda to a 21 out of 22 ranking among other small hatchbacks and wagons. Tallying a road test score of 54 points, it was trailed only by the widely panned Dodge Caliber, which managed just 49 points.

Despite the fact that it won't receive a much-coveted CR "Recommended" nod, the Insight still managed to post a "Good" overall road test score (largely on the strength of its 38 miles-per-gallon as-tested fuel economy). Regardless, it was comprehensively beaten by both the Volkswagen Jetta Wagon and the Hyundai Elantra Touring, which scored 80 and 79 points, respectively.

I think what there going to do is price it like the Maxima and Avalon but have many of the features of more upscale cars. I think this whole segment kind of sucks in the low 30's price range.

Avalon is a nice car but it's just big and boring.

The new Maxima looks ok but it has a CVT transmission and costs in the upper 30's.

Once you get in the upper 30's there are a lot better choices like the 3 series, Cadillac CTS, G37, etc.

This price segment is one area where the domestics could really do well. I think the Pontiac G8 was the only car in this price range/large 4 door that I would consider. Of course they are going to dump the G8.

Actually it is priced in that range. Lexus and Mercedes is priced much higher than this car will be.

I don't know what magazines you were reading but I received Motortrend and Automobile Magazine yesterday and both were very positive. This is not the Taurus of yesterday. It comes with the latest in technology like radar adaptive cruise control and blind spot warning systems. The SHO will come with the new 3.5L ECOboost engine which is a twin-tubocharged direct injection engine giving it V8 performance (365 hp) with V6 economy. I better stop, I'm starting to sound like a Ford dealer.

I'll have to look at them closer. I wasn't real interested in the Taurus and only read the last paragraph, which normally gives you an idea of there overall opinion.

I believe this was the paragraph that I read.

Most of what Ford has achieved here is laudable, particularly in terms of materials, quality, and styling. For those who don’t care about driver involvement, it may just be the ideal full-size family sedan. We’re on record about where we stand regarding this trait. So let’s just say that when assessed as a car for the discerning driver, the latest Taurus doesn’t invite comparisons with Bimmers, Audis, or even the Honda Accord.
