Tailgating Grill Setup

It appears that this year I will be the one in our group that is doing the grilling during tailgating. I started doing some research and what I should use and wanted other people's opinions.

I am leaning pretty heavily on buying the Weber but want to ask other CFers what their setups are before I do. My only problem is that I can only find the Weber online and would like to purchase something here in WDM just so I know I have it in time for Thursday.

I have a grill like what you are looking at....It works well and I use it for road trip grill, for home games I invested in the large weber grill like this one bought the stand for it also it cooks great, cleans up well and carries well in a car trunk of a car or back of a SUV, just more expensive Ace - Outdoor Living: Grills & Outdoor Cooking: Grills: Gas Grills: Weber Q 100 (386002)

Charcoal is the way to go my friend.

Whens the last time you almost walked on hot coals left by slob fans? You should never use charcoal at jack Trice parking lots unless you put the leftover coals in your pocket to keep warm LOL:sad:

We have the Coleman road trip grill. We like it because it has grill and griddle inserts (omelettes and pancakes are nice) Picked ours up at Sports Authority now that I type that I think it was Scheels.

And then we usually take up a charcoal double smiaker. it'll do ribs (6 racks) in around 1 1/2 hours. Smoke a turkey 12 minutes a pound.

This grill is great, folds flat and can take a beating. It fell off the top of our van when driving home from a game last year.

Also cooks the food very well.

Assuming you have decided on gas, I'll throw in my 2 cents. I use the Weber Q 220, bought it and a portable weber grill stand at Ace in Ankeny last fall, I think most Home Depots have them and a lot of Weber replacement parts/accessories. I'm very glad I have the portable stand, tripping over a grill or trying to move it halfway through and dumping your burgers all over the ground is a good way to ruin a tailgate pretty quick. The Q is very sturdy, lights up quick and gets hot quick. Easy to clean. Not all that heavy. I do wish I would have bought one with 2 seperate burners however, as cooking with indirect heat is pretty tough with only 1 burner. You could buy a cheap folding table to set that grill on, and as long as it can handle the number of burgers/brats/etc. that you need I'm sure it would do great. I had a coleman or something similar to what you are looking at, and the propane attachment was some mickey mouse job that never seemed to hold very good - I think that Weber has a support for the propane bottle so it's probably better but just so you know. I bring a full size propane tank now so I don't have to worry about running out.

Yeah...I hate those that dump their charcoal as well. I have always brought mine home and disposed of it there.

That's what leftover cooler water is for. Putting out the grill.

And if you go that route, get one of those charcoal chimney starters. They'll have your coals ready to cook in about 10 minutes.

I agree the Weber Q is the best for tailgating, there are two sizes available the smaller Weber Q works well for most people, the larger is naturally great for larger groups make sure you buy the stand for these grills but they both will work well on a folding table.

Yeah...I hate those that dump their charcoal as well. I have always brought mine home and disposed of it there.

unfortunately, too many drinkers don't think about the coals before they go into the game, if only it was ok to put them out with recycled beer, saves a trip to the portajohn that way LOL

At home I refuse to use gas, good old charcoal Weber is what I prefer. However, charcoal is kinda messy for tailgating so have a small gas grill that I lined the bottom with lava rocks which kind of soaks up the greasy runoff and keep the flavors when it burns on the rocks. Will still bring a small charcoal along when we do ribs because that is 1 thing that does not taste as good on a gas grill.

I have the Coleman Fire and Ice. An older version of the Coleman everyone is talking about. Absolutely love the think. Did get rid of the bottom cooler part and just have the thing sitting on my tailgate. The griddle top works perfect for people wanting breakfast on the early games.

Other then that..

Tent
Table and chair
Cooler of beer and wife's drinks.
Cooler for food
Tote for grill tools and plates and silverware and paper towels.
Small radio for pregame
Tailgate game

Life is good.

Thermos "Grill 2 Go" Replacement Parts and Accessories I have one of these for sale only used three times last used on 8/17 as a backup grill to keep hamburgers and hot dogs hot for a group of 75 relatives it is a combo grill and griddle solid top, grease runs off into a bottle container has the stand for it also. It works well, just not as fast as the Weber Q I like to use at tailgates. Comes with a wooden box to carry and store it in. $80 only needs a tank of propane to run it.
