he really takes the cake, especially the question about were there thoughts about giving Caleb a second chance?? Oh brother.

It’s a fair question. TJ certainly shouldn’t feel obligated to answer. But it’s a fair question.

Is it though? Does any fan (or reporter) really think he was dismissed (after his entire relationship and body of work with this program) on 1 lonely verbal screw-up?

I hope that negative comments directed at Grill via social media and CF are not part of whatever is the issue that he deals with. In his statement he did mention that he does hear and read those remarks.

That’s fine if no one thinks it’s possible. It’s still a fair question. It closes the loop, so to speak.

Also Randy’s readers aren’t on this message board necessarily so they don’t have the context that we get. All they read was Iowa State’s statement and Caleb’s statement.

It seems as though the local media has been pretty fair to Iowa State. I haven’t seen any saying they shouldn’t have kicked off a kid in the middle of a (self proclaimed) mental health crisis.

Has anyone seen anything about this on ESPN? I suppose I keep missing it but all I'm learning about is the NFL draft prospect Jalen Carter and Lebron's foot.

Of course these guys see what people say, you dont think they have access to a computer. Thats why I hate the game day threads and the other debbie downer, sky is falling posts and posters.

Sure people have a bad game, sure some people are not as talented as others or as we want them to, but sometimes people should think before they post/say things, and sometimes people need to realize these people see what they say. Many of the people that disparage the teams and players, need to take a hard look in the mirror.

I dont understand people that get that way, and then tear down individuals. I am not perfect and I make mistakes and say things at times I regret, but some people are constantly in here ripping on the teams and it really needs to stop.

Caleb Grill discloses mental illness after Iowa State dismissal

1:48 PM CT
AMES, Iowa -- Former Iowa State men's basketball player Caleb Grill said he has been battling mental illness and regrets what led to his dismissal.
Coach T.J. Otzelberger announced Wednesday that Grill had failed to meet program expectations and was no longer on the team. Grill was the Cyclones' third-leading scorer and started 22 of 25 games this season.

As part of a social media post in which he thanked Otzelberger for the opportunity to play for the Cyclones, Grill said he had been battling mental illness.

"Lastly, one day when I am brave enough, I hope to be able to share my story about my mental health and my mental illness I have been battling through all season," Grill wrote. "While everyone was commenting about the hair, or funny actions on the court, it was a way for me to get out of that state of mind and feel like me being myself instead of the dark place I have been in this season.
"If it was not for the love and support from family network back home ... I am not sure I would be alive and I would have made a decision that would have affected so many people's lives."
Otzelberger's statement did not elaborate on the reason for Grill's removal from the team, and Grill's message on Twitter indirectly referenced it. He was called for a technical foul in the second half of the Cyclones' 72-69 loss to West Virginia on Monday.
"Unfortunately, I said something that I regret which has cost me the opportunity to finish out my dream at Iowa State," he wrote. "I hope that all the players and Iowa State fans can find it in their hearts to forgive me."
Grill, who is from Maize, Kansas, played at Iowa State as a freshman and transferred to UNLV the following season when Otzelberger was head coach there. Grill moved back to Ames last year when Otzelberger got the head-coaching job with the Cyclones.
He averaged 6.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists over 116 career games at UNLV and Iowa State.

It’s an article on the MBB page.

It's always sad when a youngster can't finish out his career for whatever reason. This one is particularly tough because the player and coach were so close, and Caleb has had some great moments on the floor earlier in the year.

Yes, I hope he gets it right and maybe gets back with his team during the tournament. OU's Cortez was back last night. Fran's son came back. Maybe Caleb will as well.
