Sump Pump Noise

Up until last night we would hear our sump pump removing water from the pit but that was about all. Then, it seemed like out of nowhere, we would hear it run and then end with either a thud or a clanking noise. It seems to be running just fine.

We moved in last year in May so we never really heard it 'start up' for the Spring, but I wanted to ask if anyone knew what this could be or if anyone else experienced this.

Any information would be appreciated.

Mine hardly ever runs so I'm usually dumping water down the pit occasionally to make sure it doesn't freeze up. That being said if it is making noises it didn't make before I'd be concerned that it may need to be replaced before it fails on you

I would replace it, not much more expensive than fixing it. Just put a new one in a months ago. Good thing its running alot right now with the rain we have been getting.

Depending on the design, it cold also have picked up a small rock that's knocking around. Mine did that last fall. It kept my float engaged and the sump pump stayed running. I lucked out by being in the basement at the time, otherwise I'm sure the engine would have burned out.

Ours has a little thud at the end of the cycle. Always has.

Thumping is most likely just the check valve after the sump shuts off. Almost sounds like dropping a ball. Depending on where the check valve is located, it can be a little loud. If it is installed on the PVC right as it comes out the sump, the louder it will be.

If it's a thud and only happens right after the pump shuts off, its the check valve and wouldn't worry as much. Ifs its a clanking while it is running, then that is a sign to replace the valve or pump.

Could also be the float on/off on the pump in the pit or that it could be hit something. I do agree with the jd's quote on the check valve.

Take the float shut on/off and move it up or down by hand to check for a clanking noise. Our sump kicked in for the first time yesterday and once today.

Mine has always ended with a little thud at the end of each cycle. I always thought the anti-drainback valve maybe caused the pipe to shake a little but I'm not sure. Probably not anything to be concerned about if it's still moving water.

I use to once a year dump water in the pit to make it run because I never heard it. About 5 years ago, I tried to dump water in it and it wouldn't run. I unplugged the pump and no problems since. I guess our basement is in good shape.

I'll see what its like when I get home. It seemed to shuffle between a clank to a thud to nothing last night. Fiance said its been fine today but occasionally sounded like a squeeky playground spring. Again, appreciate the responses.
