State Fair Grandstand - Not So Grand (Part II)

To further our discussion from a few weeks ago about just how week the State Fair Grand Stand has gotten, here is the updated list of shows. Not real impressive, at least to me.

* August 7: Michael W. Smith, 8 p.m., $25 (tickets on sale now)
* August 8: Josh Turner with special guest Craig Morgan, 8 p.m. $32
* August 9: Rick Springfield with special guest Patty Smyth and Scandal, 8 p.m., $25
* August 10: Cinderella with all reunited Warrant and Night Ranger, 8 p.m., $25
* August 11: Deery Brothers Summer Series For Late Models
* August 12: The Charlie Daniels Band and 38 Special with Shooter Jennings, 8 p.m., $32
* August 13: Grand Outlaw National Tractor and Truck Pull
* August 14: Vanessa Hudgens and Corbin Bleu, 8 p.m., $30
* August 15: Tracy Lawrence and Blake Shelton, 8 p.m., $28
* August 16: Demolition Derby
* August 17: Garrison Keillor, 8 p.m., $25 (tickets on sale now)

According to the Rag the 16th evening is still open. Def Leppard is scheduled to be in Des Moines that night.

Yes, color me unimpressed as well. In fact, I've never heard of half of that lineup. This just reinforces my opinion that there's nothing really worth seeing at the state fair.

I wouldn't even consider going to any of those shows, especially for 25 bucks. Honestly the most appealing thing on there to me is the demolition derby. That's saying something right there.

The Jones County Fair in Monticello has Josh Turner & Jo Dee Messina, Dierks Bentley & Miranda Lambert w/ Halfway to Hazard, and of course Boston.

Not bad for a town of 3000

That's probably the best concert in the lineup. There are a few decent free concerts too, can't remember exactly who else but James Otto who is one of the MuzikMafia artists is one of them. He just released his debut album last week that is pretty decent including the #5 song on the country charts right now.

The fair has been dead to me for decades. The Well is a lot better place for concerts.

The Clay County Fair in Spencer usually gets some great acts too. They've had Trace Atkins and Brad Paisley in the past, I think Sara Evans too. Will be interesting to see who they get this year.

I grew up in Delaware Country, shares a border with Jones County. Jones consistently has one of the best fairs - if not the best - in the state year in and year out. One of the reasons is they consistently bring in great talent.

I remember reading an article back in high school, featuring a big time country artist (I can't recall exactly who is was). He was asked what one of his favorite moments/concerts was of the previous year. He couldn't pick just one, but Jones County Fair was on a list of 3 or 4 he gave.

Back to the State Fair - I agree this lineup is sub par at best. They aught to give Vanilla Ice or MC Hammer a call while they're at it. Sadly enough, that might be an upgrade...

I guess all the good concert tours just want too much moola to make stops at the state fairs...

I think it's one of the best sounds regardless of who's singing the other nights.
