He missed the tourney once in 6 years. You've got some crazy high expectations for what constitutes being a big success at a mediocre mid major.
But how many draft picks?

VCU finished 1st or 2nd in the CAA in 6 of the 7 seasons prior to Smart. Give Smart credit for underperforming in the regular season followed by winning the CAA conference tournament, and moving to a multiple bid conference. Nothing about that suggests killing it in the P5 level where you need to do more than show up for 3 days in early March.

Using those standards Hoiberg was a failure.

I guess agree to disagree, there's no way you're going to convince me that his run at VCU wasn't wildly successful.
