Anyone out there have suggestions on who to go with in Central Iowa for siding a house? We're also looking for a fence.

Also, how much should we look for in price on a small Cape Cod style (1700 ft. or so)?

I figured the good folks at CF would have suggestions.

I just had pre-painted James Hardie Fiber Cement put on and we paid around $12,000 and got them to throw in a new front door as well. I want to say we had around 2,000 square feet to cover.

For the fence just call Des Moines Fence and be done with it ... I know several people that have used them and they are really good and their bids always seem to be the best.

Don't use Farm & Home Builders. We had them do both windows and siding. They started putting up the wrong siding at first and then we couldn't get them to come back and fix two windows with imperfections that they admitted were wrong. I called about three times and then finally tracked down the crew that originally installed the windows at my neighbors. They tried installing lesser quality windows at my neighbors too, vs. what they paid for. Run as fast as you can from them.

Not sure where you are located, but I work for a small siding company out of Ankeny. We work mostly between Ames and DSM but do travel. We install vinyl, steel, LP and Hardie siding. We also install windows and doors.

Pricing would depend on what product you want installed. Vinyl being the least expensive to Hardie on the higher end. Siding for as long as I have in the area, I can assure you top quality work. We currently do all of the siding for Rich Lepper Construction, Raethert Construction, Richardson Construction and most siding for Hanson Homes, among many other jobs including condos, apartments and home redos.

There are currently 4 ISU grads on our crew so you'd be helping to give a few fellow alumni some extra work. As far as fences go, I don't know much, but I have seen quality work from The Door and Fence Store out of Ames.

Anyways, if you're interested and within reasonable driving distance from DSM or Ames get back to me and I'll have my boss come out and give you a quote, free obviously. He would also have several references available. Good luck in whatever route you take!

I have also heard nothing but good things about Des Moines Fence, although personally I've never used them.

Superior Exteriors did some siding work (vinyl) on our former house in Johnston last year. Insurance paid to replace 2 of the 4 sides, but they were able to replace 1 side and use good pieces to patch the other side, saving us quite a bit of $$. Very personable guys, easy to work with too.

Our cost was around $2700, but that was to tear down and replace one 2-story wall, and patch the other wall. We also got a 10% discount for being first-time customers, not sure if they still offer that.

Des Moines Steel Fence. Worked for them in college and I still know the owner well. If you get a lower bid from somebody else, you are most likely getting lower grade products, lower gauge fence, etc..
Plus, they have done a lot of the work around Jack Trice.
