Any of you that were in Ames in the mid 90s remember this place? The RC thread made me think of their off brand soda. I think the Mt Dew version was called Hee-haw

I believe Save U More got bought by Jim Wagner for a dealership, then it became a go kart place when Nissan and Honda moved to Airport Rd (Van Wall and now ISU).
That whole Duff lot and area sure has changed.

I MISS SAVE-U-MORE!!!

...because I prefer to bag my own groceries. The baggers at HyVee put three items in each bag & call it good. Or they put a head of lettuce on top of a bag of peaches and think the peaches will survive the drive home. Or they put a half gallon of milk in a plastic bag with bread or potato chips, or ice cream in a bag with crackers... Arrrggghhh!!!

Years ago they actually used to teach their employees to bag, but I don't think there is nearly as much training in that area anymore.

Yeah I know they did that.

I'll try and tread lightly on this but I've noticed lately that the HyVee's in Ankeny have been doing a good job hiring some people with developmental issues/handicapped and have them bag. So it's tough to get too upset about it, I usually just swap some items if necessary in my bags before leaving.

I shop at HyVee and half the time I AM bagging my own. They'll have 6 check out lines, but 2 people bagging. So I either wait 10 minutes for the poor checker to bag them or I just do it myself. The numbnuts running things should know that adding checkout lanes does little to speed things up if they have to bag everything too.

I hear ya - but I find they often take more pride in what they're doing.
When I take the time to sort the stuff (freezer/fridge/dry goods) as I put it on the feed, and ask baggers to bag my purchases accordingly, it's not the differently-abled baggers that ignore my requests. :)

We would get kegs of Natural Light therefor $36. Good thing they were cheap. We had a couple parties at 109 S Russell where we would go through 9 a night.

SUM had to date back to the late 70's. I remember shopping in there as a kid with my folks. The original HyVee that I remember was on Duff where Dollar Tree is now. It then became a Snyder Drug after the Save U More opened.

When I moved to Iowa in 1983, there was a smaller HyVee at the current Lincoln Center location. Target was in the building that Hobby Lobby is in now. Right around 2000, HyVee remodeled and greatly expanded their store. Save-U-More was closed, and some of its employees moved to the HyVee (a friend of mine was the dairy manager at SUM, and moved to a similar position at the HyVee).
I don't think the Go-Cart facility lasted a full year, but I wasn't a patron, so I don't remember. Target built their new store and moved into it. A bookstore was at the previous Target location iirc, then Hobby Lobby moved in. Walmart built their superstore about 10-12 years ago, and killed off what was left of the K-Mart. All those small restaurants on S Duff have mostly moved in during the last 10 or so years. LOTS of changes on S Duff over the years...mostly traffic inducing. I avoid the area now. :)

I moved to Ames in 1981, so I remember those changes as well. It must be a common blind spot for cities because I've lived in Cedar Rapids since 1991 and Collins Rd is much like Duff Ave. Tons of commercial added over the years without consideration for set backs or multiple traffic options.

Snyder became an Osco and we would buy 30 packs of High Life/Natty/Busch for $7.

That generic beer at SUM was ROUGH, white cans with black lettering that said BEER. My standards were pretty low back then for beer and it was rough even by my standards, made red, white and blue seem like a top shelf product.

The SUM store flooded and that was the main reason we closed it and added the second store. The SUM was an experiment in self self service type stores, much do it yourself type which was a fad at the time. we found some liked it some did not.
