Thinking if we can recruit Lake Travis for a QB we ought to figure out a way to get this kid to Ames. Everything I am being told is that he is BIG TIME. Sounds like he had a great first game as a true sophomore varsity starter against Southlake even though they came up short.

We gotta find a way to get a top tier QB to Ames. The Lake Travis vs Westlake game is being played at Lake Travis again this year according to the schedule. DD vs Sam Ehlinger. This could be telling!

Also told that Westlake has a new transfer who is a sophomore and is 6' 6"--280 left tackle. Being told that this kid is big time. Please can we just figure out a way to offer a package deal if true!!!

By this post, I'm now seeing watercooler talk in Texas:

"Hey, have you seen X play at YHS?"

"No, but I've heard about him...is he big time?"

"Oh, he's big time...."

"Big time....."

Edit: And...forgot to ask...should we read into the QB getting all caps on the "BIG TIME" but the LT not even getting uppercase B and T on "big time" that he's a lower level of "big time"?

hiawatha, ia
These kids are 5-6 years away from seeing the field at the BCS level. This coaching staff probably won't be around to see them play in Ames.

I like the use of the word "true" in "true sophomore"....for a high school player. Makes unofficial redshirting sound like commonplace in Texas.

Well I for one will be watching to see the final score of this game later on in the season. Say what you guys like but my buddy in Austin says Sam is the real deal. Just wish we could get one of those difference makers down south to come be part of getting this program up and running again. "big time" is that better for you guys. We will know soon enough. I do think that my buddy knows a thing or two about football talent since he has been in Texas for a while now and has been surrounded by it since he lives in Central Texas. According to him with 26 million people and year round playing of the sport in Texas it is astounding to see such talent at ever level of high school football.

If he's really truly that "big time," he won't make it out of Texas.

No kidding. I don't doubt how "big time" he is, but if he's that damn good we don't have to worry if he's coming here or not, because he's not.

There was a BIGTIME QB out of Council Bluff, Iowa. ISU missed him twice (St. Albert High School in 2010 and missed him again when he was looking to transfer from Iowa Western Community College in 2012.) Instead the Clones offered Rohach, Hodge, Lanning and Campbell. Pass me a Tums.

Jake Waters not big time out of high school...

2x State Champ QB
37-2 record
3x First team QB (INA)
Better stats than any existing Clone QB out of high school.

Oh, wait, he isn't from TX or CA...he's from our home state...he must sux.

See, the damn coaches need to evaluate talent and not copy cat offer TX and CA kids or - the present lazy approach of hoping for JUCOs.

Drew Brees left Texas as well as Andrew Luck oh and so did Chase Daniels. Could probably go on and on. Seems to me that you have to know how to evaluate talent and go hard for a kid early on before he is on everyone's radar. Then we might be able to get some of these kids to come to Ames.

We need a situation like we had with Niang. Get him before he blows up and hope he stays true.

We actually just need a staff that can recruit period. ISU and Ames is a good enough place for any recruit in the country. I don't care what anyone says, there are plenty of teams north of Missouri that have had Uber successful teams. I don't care what conference they play in. We haven't, because we don't recruit to our needs to be successful. Or in ways to be successful.

Yep, at a Class 1A school, that hardly ever looses, no matter who the QB is.

I'm not saying he's no good now, I think he's awesome, but you can't blame the staff for not offering him out of HS. Nobody did, so does that mean Bill Snyder, Bo Pelleni, Gary Pinkel, and Kirk Ferentz also can not identify talent?

Some guys just get better at the next level, glad he did. Where the Iowa St staff mis evaluated him was coming out of Juco.

We have a "big time" QB's in Ames. Several actually. One of them even attended the Elite 11 QB camp.

I was at the game - my kids go to Southlake Carroll. The kid is a stud. Spins it well, moves well within the pocket and was a load to bring to the ground. Any kid that can start in a Todd Dodge offense is worth taking a hard look at. Last I checked, Chase Daniel and Greg McElroy did alright for themselves.
