Going back from last year to this year, some very interesting comparisons.

Last year, regular season through the Big 12 tourney, ISU played 17 top 50 RPI teams. (out of 33 games). In those games ISU was 11-6 in those games and was 2-5 in true road games. They went from 8-6 during the regular season to 11-6 winning all three of their B12 Tourney games. Average RPI in the top 50 was 29.35

This year, not counting the Big 12 tourney, ISU has played 15 top 50 RPI teams, (in 29 games). ISU is 10-5 in those games and is 4-3 in true road games. Average RPI of the top 50 teams they played was 22.27.

ISU has done just as well overall against the top 50, better on the road, against a tougher slate of top 50 teams this year. Not saying this year isn’t without it’s disappointments, but it isn’t because they’ve struggled against the best teams on their schedule, it’s because they’ve lost to more of the teams they shouldn’t.

Agree completely. Take away the Tech debacle and hold on to one of the two blown leads against Baylor/K-State and we likely finish with a Big 12 championship.

Considering we are sitting 2 games back and that's three extra wins we would be guaranteed to have a Big 12 title.

Guess it's how you look at it. Tech has played some real good basketball at home this year against other good teams besides us. And losing an 8 point lead in the last 7 minutes is hardly blowing it, especially in the 3 point era. Baylor played great and took it, kind of like we played great and took it from OU in the 2nd half.

Really all that matters at this point, IMHO is what we do starting March 17th.

This season has gone very well for the most part. If we are bounced out the first weekend, everyone will remember this team as not living up to expectations.

If we advance to the Sweet 16, most will be fairly happy with how this team turned out.

If we advance to the Elite 8 or greater, it will go down as one of the, if not the best team in ISU's history.

It almost doesn't matter what happens Saturday or next week in KC, except for the fact that winning more games will help our seeding.

Great post. Special team this season. Not perfect. But very special.

Can't wait to finish off TCU Saturday and get down to KC!

To further compare the teams------This year's adj offense and defensive numbers: 117.5 (7th) 97.6 (82nd)

Last year's adj offense and defensive numbers----118.4 (6th) 99.9 (72nd)

Pretty darn close again......

Why not? We've made 1 Elite 8 in the modern era. If this team makes it that far, its not a stretch to classify them as one of the best teams in ISU history. If they go to the Final 4, they earn that title IMO>

I only bolded the part where acg said THE best. ONE of the best is fair - THE best is not.

And thanks for being so quick to ensure you've told everyone in no way could this team be the best in history if they make it that far. Now we all know to lower the expectations and adoration for the team.

Adoration has nothing to do with it. Lower expectations? I would say they have already been lowered by not winning the conference.
26-4 (14-2) Big 12 Outright conference champs. Arguably the national champions, if not screwed by the committee. This years team can not top this. Sorry.
I am still cheering for them just the same but please lets not even compare the two.

Winning the BigXII tourney and reaching the Final Four are still very achievable for this team. If they do that, I think there is a legitimate argument that could be made that this team is better.

That team only spent the last 6 weeks of the season ranked, this team has been ranked all year.

The 2000 team had 7 wins against ranked teams. An Elite 8 team this year would likely have 11.

The 2000 team had 2 losses against unranked teams, this team has 4.

The only things in my mind that the 2000 team has that this team can't achieve are a regular season BigXII title and an undefeated home record. The more difficult schedule and making it one round further in the tourney would compensate for those in my mind.

the '99-'00 team was certain the best in ISU history, and it was extra special for me as it was my senior year in college, but just like every other discussion comparing the current team to previous teams, history clouds your judgment. That team was the great team you remember until their tournament runs were finished. This team's story hasn't been written yet. Maybe they underachieve in the tourney, it could happen. But as the chance still exists, they deserve to not be written off yet.

Stupid, stupid post. First of all, your entire premise is wrong. He didn't say there is no way they could be the best team in ISU history. He just said "if they make it that far." Obviously this team still has a chance to make the Final Four, which would surpass the current gold standard. The 1999-2000 team didn't do make the Final Four, but just for grins, let's look at what they DID do:

32-5 (14-2), Elite Eight
#3 in the final coaches poll, #6 in the AP
#3 in the RPI
NCAA Midwest Region All-Tournament Team: Marcus Fizer, Jamaal Tinsley
NABC Pete Newell Big Man Award, Marcus Fizer
USBWA Coach of the Year, Larry Eustachy
Associated Press Coach of the Year, Larry Eustachy
Consensus All-American, Marcus Fizer First Team
Won the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles
Big 12 Player of the Year Award: Marcus Fizer
Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Award: Jamaal Tinsley
Big 12 Coach of the Year Award: Larry Eustachy
All-Big 12 Team: Marcus Fizer, First Team; Jamaal Tinsley, Second Team
Big 12 Tournament All-Tournament Team: Marcus Fizer, Jamaal Tinsley, Stevie Johnson
Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player: Marcus Fizer

Sure, this year's team COULD be the greatest ever, but they've got a lot of work to do to surpass all that.

How DARE you use facts to ruin the day for the "Negative Nellies" on this board. Oh wait, facts can't ruin their day because they choose to ignore facts, relying instead on their preconceived biases.
