Interesting that so many streamers on this site tout the ability to quickly change services as one of the biggest benefits, but then when faced with the prospect of Roku dropping YTTV most seem to be thinking they would swap hardware for every TV in the house. Why not just jump to Hulu or Sling or something while you wait for this to work out? Do people just feel the YTTV product is so far ahead of the others now that it is worth the HW cost to keep it?

Not sure what this looks like, but on Roku I was able to use the ABC, Fox, and NBC apps with my cable log in to watch live TV. CBS was behind a paywall

I haven't done it in a while, but it did work for a time.
That's pretty much how this works. You have an account that is used to access the various different apps.

I think the reason it is offered is because the major TV providers have the feature built in to their product. Watch TV everywhere offers the service to subscribers of the small companies that don't have the resources to offer it.

We have a mix of Roku and Apple TV's. I love the Apple TV performance and feature set but always hated the remote not having a mute button so switched to Roku. Now that they have a proper remote coming out in May, moving back to ATV.

Tried Sling, and it blows in comparison. Definitely open to looking at other options, but not that one.

It sounds like the small companies are getting extra scratch providing something the larger carriers provide for free. Not cool, but happy it works for folks

I get that there's some basic free channels on roku but I am also suprised they don't have a YTTV/Sling equivalent. They could he made a low offer at Vue and reorganized it.

I'd be really interested to know how Roku's finances work but it seems they've been successful by not taking sides or being their own content provider. If you get either a Roku device or a TV with Roku, you knew it was going to work with almost any streaming service. It's been a super nice benefit to consumers to have a tv that keeps it's software updated versus the unpredictability of a TV manufacturer's software. And then your streaming device doesn't try to get you locked into a certain ecosystem like Google, Amazon, or Apple. It keeps them honest.

It appears that the time is coming finally where cable companies will out douche each other with their streaming counterparts. Mediacom cable with premium channels and no contract is actually cheaper than streaming if you get a deal. I've tried every streaming service multiple times, multiple trials....the prices are getting out of hand, and for sports you still get a delay. I had mediacom for 2 years and cancelled, went with youtube tv last year, cancelled for summer...getting to the point where I might just stick with cable for good, since the price increases on streaming line up with cables, and you can't get retention discounts on streaming.

Yeah I've got one of those. Actually it's a simple choice, I just cancel YTTV.
I canceled YTTV by choice when they hiked their fee. I’m not sure why anybody would go to the expense of a new streaming device to keep YTTV when there are cheaper and, IMO, better alternatives available on Roku already.

If this goes through, I will most likely switch to Hulu+.

Yeah, I like Apple TV the best. It’s more expensive upfront but the ability to buy movies is nice.

Yep. After switching to Sling for the summer it only took me 5 mins to miss YTTV’s format. I also have issues with Sling buffering and cutting out. I’ll put up with it to save $40/month but once CFB starts back up, I’m switching back.

I'm curious what you think is better than YTTV. I find YTTV to be the best but is also one of the most expensive.

I have several Roku's but don't use YTTV. I appreciate their moral stance, but this seems like a bad business take. I don't see how it helps their sales.

Not really related but does anyone know when Mediacom is going to get WOI back?

My contract is up and I’d like to stay with Mediacom but don’t want to sign with them until they have WOI which I will want in the fall.

Switching from Dish to Fubo on Friday. I really like Firestick and its remote as well, with the right version you can control all your devices with it. Push the power button and all you need to control is on.

The Des
Chromecast must have come a long ways because the 1st gen sucked compared to roku devices of the time. I have a couple collecting dust somewhere I barely used.

They have. The first gen was basically just a way to cast from a mobile device to a TV. Now, it's a full streaming device for $30. I like it more than the Apple TV, fire sticks, and Rokus we have.
