I'll be expected to treat the wife to something good to eat after the game. Any suggestions for Lawrence, or should I just hit KC on the way back to Des Moines?

I would say KC. I work in Lawrence and they don't have anything that jumps out as original. Free State, 23rd St & Lawrence Breweries are pretty decent.

BBQ I would hit up Q39, Joes KC, Jack Stack, or Blindbox bbq.

Thanks for the advice. And no, I won't be taking her to Pizza Hut unless I want a punch in the nuts.

Eat in KC, on your way back to the Mother land.

1. KC Joes (BBQ)
2. Jazz a lousiana Restaurant (Cajun, new Orleans)
3. Blue Koi (Odd Thia place, a little hipster).

Kellys for Beers, or P&L to party it up.......

When you say treat, are you thinking something a little more upscale? A place like Joe's is great bbq, but it is a counter service fast casual type place.

Lawrence has some dope spots:

Free State Brewery - not typical brewery fare.

715
Limestone
Bon Bon

All great food for people with great taste.

Lawrence KS
SULLY AND HANKS
There is one choice that is prepping for Iowa State fans with plenty of Busch Lite... they also have the largest can selection in the area for those of us who like other beers.

If like out of the ordinary burgers / sandwhiches / pretzels/ tater tots etc.... Go check out sully and Hanks... It is only a few blocks north of the Stadium... Its a Diner Drive-in and Dives type amazing place.

And anyone who says KC has better food than Lawrence doesn't know what they are talking about.

Other places,
Merhcants - Highend
eta: Mass Street Fish House - Excellent Seafood solid Oyster Bar. Good specials if you stick around for Sunday.
715 - Smaller local portions
Bon Bon
Limestone
Lark a Fare - new good
Thai Diner - for something different

Brunches -
Lady Bird Diner
Wake the Dead
any other place on Mass...
Sully and Hanks - they are opening at 9am for Gameday so if you need something good go there for either lunch dinner or brunch.

My suggestion is try Sully and Hanks, get the caramel filled pretzel and don't worry about the calories.

You are sending someone to Sully and Hanks? That would be a good pre-game and a short walk, but it it is not one of the must hit stops of town. Especially for a guy taking his wife out.

Depends on your wife, and depends on what you consider a good night out. For me and mine? We go there often because its awesome food with little fuss. I also listed the other better spots for a higher end dinner if that's what they are looking for. But yes Sully and Hanks has more out of the box options than most and its a really cool spot with excellent beer diversity, which is what me and my wife look for rather than eating a nice steak that we can get anywhere.

OOO okay I did forget Mass Street Fish House, coming from a NC native, this place does really good seafood.

Also we will have to agree to disagree... I put Sully and Hanks above a lot of others as must hit spots, we take all our out of town guests there and no one has ever complained.

Must hits of Lawrence:
Free State Brewery
Limestone

Almost there:
715
Bon Bon

You would be stoked:
Biemers BBQ
Terrebonne
Wheatfields
1900
Alchemy
Ladybird
Zen Zero
Basil Leaf
Lawrence Beer Co
Dempsey's - people rave Burger Stand, but I thinks it's greasy.
Johnny's North
Wa
Yokohama
Ramen Bowls
The Roost

There are a lot of other good joints, but I would highly recommend Limestone or Free State.

If you are headed back to Des Moines stop at the Legends by the race track. Lots of shops and plenty of choices for restaurants. Cabellas is always a good place to walk around.

Everything people listed so far is pretty good. It really depends on what you feel like after the game. Free State or Lawrence Brewing Company (new) are good place to eat and have good local brews.

Stop by The Burger Stand @ the Casbah. You won't be disappointed.

There's a small, quaint, neighborhood Italian restaurant called Osteria Il Centro south of the plaza that is very good. Need to get there early. Right next to Minsky's Pizza. I would second Q39 also.
