You want a lot of positive reputation. If someone posts something you like/agree with, you give them positive rep.

As was mentioned before, you give positive/negative rep by clicking the little blue box down and to the left of someone's name beside their post. You give positive rep by saying "I approve", and negative rep by saying "I disapprove".
To check your rep, go to User CP in the upper left, and then go down to the words User Control Panel (which look like a red heading, but is clickable). Your last five items of rep will show up there (you may also get a PM whenever someone gives you rep).
Green is positive and given by people with a positive rep. Blue/gray can be either negative or positive, but doesn't change your rep level, because it's given by someone who doesn't have any points yet (hence, the system doesn't see them as able to affect others' rep - either because they haven't posted or gotten rep). Red is negative rep, which brings your total rep down. Somebody either didn't like what you had to say or the way you said it (or they're just being disagreeable).

This is the first thread about this in a while.
I thought somebody was getting a little too worked up about something, and their posts were beginning to reflect that he/she had not put much rational thought into them. He responded by going to find an old post of mine and dinged me down. Since then, he has apologized and everything is in the clear.

Yeah that was always fun hiding behind your neg rep. It was a lot more common then because you could neg rep someone and they would not know who did it. Now if you do it, you should expect some back.
Last neg rep I got was for calling John Edwards and ambulance chaser....Someone got really upset.
There were even a couple of people who would sign another member's name when leaving neg rep (they were banned). The accountability now is a vast improvement.
Isn't the one and only Discombobulated the only member to be banned? Boy I don't miss his pessimism one little bit.
There have been VERY few bannings - but I think you're right, I think that was him!!
I gave up caring about the Reputation thing because I don't think the formula used is very good. I've been here since the beginning but a few weeks ago someone attacked one of my posts and called me a liar. When I responded she and one of her buddies both gave me negative Rep. Turned out the attacker had joined just a few months ago, is on this site 24/7, and posts about 1,000 posts a day. So despite being here longer and have several positive reps I found that I had a negative rep of billion. Reputation means nothing when it can be abused this way. And yes, I notified the mods when I got dinged for just responding to an attack; but they did nothing. In my opinion they ought to just get rid of the Reputation thing if they can't figure out a reasonable way to moderate it and make abusers pay for abusing the system.
