I'm with Al and Clones21, I think Atif is the man we go for right now. I think he fits the young and enthusiastic characteristic of our coaching staff (with the exception of Wally, who is just enthusiastic). From the article I posted below, it seems that he would most definately be qualified. He played while Rhoads was here didn't he??

From: UNI Assistant Football Coach Atif Austin Selected to Attend 2007 NCAA Football Coaching Academy - NORTHERN IOWA OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
University of Northern Iowa assistant football coach Atif Austin has been selected to attend the 2007 NCAA Football Coaching Academy. Austin is entering his third season as running backs coach with the Panthers.

The Academy, targeted for minority coaches, is a preparatory class for becoming a head coach with participants selected by a committee from the NCAA. It will be held June 30 - July 2 at the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown in Indianapolis, Ind.
Austin was instrumental in helping running back Darian Williams attain Gateway Football Conference Newcomer of the Year honors in 2006. Williams ranked eighth in the Gateway in rushing yards per game (59.4) and ranked second on the team with 653 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. The Panthers' other feature back in '06 was Corey Lewis, who rushed for a team-high 894 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Lewis ranked No. 27 in the nation and No. 5 in the Gateway in rushing yards/game (99.3).

In 2005, Austin helped running back David Horne set the UNI single-season rushing touchdown record with 17. Horne rushed for 1,141 yards to lead the Panthers into the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA I-AA national title game. Along with Horne's accomplishments, the Panthers were able to mix in fellow senior Terrance Freeney into the UNI running game. Freeney rushed 172 times for 656 yards and nine touchdowns in 2005.

Austin served as a graduate assistant at Southwest Minnesota State University (2003-2004), the first working with the secondary and the last aiding with the inside linebackers.

A native of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Austin was a four-year starter as a defensive back at Iowa State University from 1998-2002. He received honorable mention All-Big 12 honors by The Associated Press in 2001 and was presented the 2002 Reuben J. Miller Award, given to the player whose conduct on and off the field has brought honor to ISU. He redshirted in 1998, then compiled 173 career tackles, including 146 solos and 27 assisted stops. He also was credited with 33 pass deflections and two interceptions.

Austin majored in Sociology and Exercise and Sport Science at ISU and earned his master's in Leadership and Education from Southwest Minnesota in January. He was a four-year Honor Roll recipient as a prep. He was a member of Citizens Alliance for Progress, an organization that acknowledges strong academic performance. He was born Nov. 23, 1978, in Tampa, Fla. He and his wife, Tori, are the parents of Djoni, 9, and Amni, 4.

Pretty confident it will be Bobby Elliot.

CPR wants a coach with experience.

You know I don't think any of the coaches Coach Rhoads hired in the past were ones that people on this board had predicted.

I'm pretty confident he'll surprise us....

I am fairly certain that it will be Bobby and this is the best possible result for us. He is superior to every candidate in every imaginable area except for age. If you are critical of his leaving us in 2001 think about this-

Imagine if you had been the unofficial Head Coach in waiting at your alma mod only to have bad health ruin any chance of that. You then take a job w/ a friend who was as close to being fired prior to 2000 as he was of being extended. You have success together and you have another chance to climb the ladder- a chance that you did not think you would get again. Since ISU already had a DC- what do you do?

Are you telling me that Bobby made the wrong choice?

Clearly Mac was okay w/ Bobby leaving as he was standing on our sideline on a cold November day in 2004 cheering (along w/ Fank Solich) in hopes of the Cyclones winning the Big 12 North. We have fans who did not even make that game so I don't want to hear that he is not loyal us.

If he had not been ill, we would have had no chance at landing this man as our HEAD COACH- let alone as our secondary coach.

We won't hire a better teacher than Bobby (not even Ash-and don't forget, Bobby mentored him).We have a chance to get a guy who has recruiting contacts that are established in Iowa better and longer than anybody on our current staff and in California for the past three years.

Age is certainly a concern when you consider that he is replacing a stud (like Ash)but this time, age is in our favor as we have a chance to land one of the most respected teachers in the game of college football at a time when he is likely making his last stop. Continuity is a huge plus!

We can hire somebody else (Atif) and I have no doubt that they could be great and I will be pleased w/ them. It will be hard to beat the resume of Bobby.

Paul and Wally become even better than they are if Bobby is hired IMO.

Well put...

What I wonder is does Bobby have the energy to recruit and does he have connections out West? Those are two of the more important things I think Rhoads will look at.

I've always liked Bobby Elliot. Just not sure if the timing is right for both parties on this deal..

he has the same connections out west as Ash had but Bobby was there a year longer (while not coaching ly).

He has better connections in Iowa than any member of our existing staff.

Age and health are legitimate conerns IMO but he is a heck of a coach. NFL guys go to him for tips.

Also a great special teams coach

You have to be kidding, right?
His defenses - if you want to call them that - at San Diego St. were absolutely awful. They gave up an average of 37 points and 460 yards per game his last year.

He was there 2 years and I don't think he had much talent.

I should probably point out that he coached some great defenses at KSU and Iowa. Anyway he would be the DB coach here anyway.

He was handed a great defensive system and great personnel at KSU, but by the end of his stay there it had seriously declined. It seemed clear that Snyder was looking for a change when Elliott "left" to join Long at SDSU.
I agree, maybe as a DB coach he will be fine.

yes, I am kidding because you know more about football than Hayden Fry, Dan McCarney, Larry Coyer, Mack Brown and Bill Snyder. All of these men worked with this man and think the world of his talent.

This guy is simply awful:biglaugh:

Ellis Hobbs is where he is today because of this man's eye (otherwise- Ellis had told Mac he was staying @ RB)

Tornado- you would argue about anything. Since you are big on stats.

In his first season at San Diego State, the Aztecs were second in the MWC in pass defense (171.0 yards per game) and second in red zone defense (67.3 percent).

-Had a four-year run at Kansas State in which the Wildcats posted two 11-win seasons, claimed the school's lone Big 12 championship and advanced to the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, the only appearance in a BCS Bowl game in school history.
-During his tenure, K-State went 31-19 (62.0 winning percentage) with four victories over nationally ranked teams.
-His 2002 Wildcat defensive unit finished the season ranked first in scoring defense, second in total defense, second in rushing defense and third in passing efficiency defense. -The 2003 Wildcats were sixth nationally in total defense, eighth in scoring defense, 12th in pass efficiency defense and 17th in rushing defense.

Choke on that superfan!

Just as he was handed a poor system @ SDSU.

I suppose you did not care for his Iowa tenure either?

Who do you think is better for this job??? Since you have all of the answers, superfan

+1 post.

Don't forget that Bobby Elliot's dad was Chalmers W. "Bump" Elliott , former Athletic Director at Iowa. I would think that this means a lot to any potential hawkeye recruit's family. No matter if the kid ends up going to Iowa or ISU, it gives us a stronger position in their eyes.

If we end up with Atif, I wouldn't be upset with that. Both good picks in my eyes.

You know I don't find that reason a real compelling argument to get Bobby. Bump's been gone almost longer than most of these kids have been in existence. I would think it would be of very little help to us anymore...

MoWilly is correct with the choice and reasoning. Its Elliot. Great secondary coach, good recuiter. Ash was a good secondary coach and a great recruiter. He'll keep the connections in Cali going.

Elliott will probably also bolt after one or two years at Iowa State. That has been his "method of operation" in the past.

Negative for us. Ash left for a promotion which is fine, because he can do what ever he wants to. He was just our best recruiter and that kind of hurts.

I've never quite figured out the love fest some folks have for Ash?

Sure he's a good coach, but we have plenty of them on staff.

This is the way football coaching works. They move on.

We'll be just fine...

Eliott will stay around long enough to make sure Iowa fails. He hates Iowa and he will do everything in his power to return the state to Cyclone glory. He will expose Freerents for what he really is - a fraud coach in a fraud conference.
