I’m not sure your grasping at how different the college football landscape will be starting this year. Conference schedules and media power will bolster SOS going forward for the P2. No reason to play ND or anyone in the ACC or Big 12 to be honest. I think these first 2 years will be a trial period and we will find out how the committee weighs things and teams will schedule accordingly going forward. All those teams will have a bye week during the season, how many are going to pass on a chance to play ND to fill that week? No one said it would be easy to fill out their schedule, but teams like BYU did it and they aren't ND. Difficult yes, but not impossible, plus the B12 would take them in a moment under the same type of deal that the ACC offered them, play 5 conference games each season and all their other sports. The B10 and SEC I doubt would take that deal, but the B12 would.
I find it very hard to believe ND could fill out a decent schedule past week 4 given the landscape going forward.
Josh Pate hinted yesterday on his podcast that if a 9-3 Big 12 team upset a higher ranked team and won the conference championship and got the auto bid and took a spot away from a 9-3/10-2 SEC/Big10 team they will just change the criteria in their favor to get more of their teams in. Ex: elimination of auto bids.
The 12 team playoff wasn’t designed for more inclusion and more parity. It was made by the networks and Sankey and Pettiti to maximize the amount of teams they can get in and to make as much money as possible. That’s not from me it’s from the #1 college football podcast in America.
