I was awake a lot last night, too, although I didn't get up. I did hear an owl sometime early morning and have been trying to figure out what it was. Checked 2-3 websites with audio and so far, no luck.
The thing is, the call wasn’t either of those. I’ve heard barred owls, even two at the same time. The call was a single sound - a little higher pitch which then went down slightly. Reminded me of the shape of a candy cane.Either Barred Owls of Great Horned Owls. The GHO is the classic "Hoo hoo hoo". Folks describe the Barred as "Who cooks for you. Who cooks for you!" but I've never thought it sound quite like that. If it evolves into a crazy calliope of wild jungle like calls, it's a Barred for sure.
This article has them both and might be a good reference. I have a couple videos of the calling but can't link them.
