Interesting discussion.

Of course, things will look pretty different again in about 10 years. New schools will be considered "big" around the Des Moines area. Dallas Center-Grimes and Norwalk will both be over 700 BEDs in 2-3 years. Waukee will split in 4-6 years. Keep an eye on Johnston and SE Polk. Within 5-10 years they will be close to 2000 BEDs and could be pondering split high schools as well. That's easily five new 4A schools in 10 years.

The next wave will probably come from the Bondurants, Ballards and Gilberts of Central Iowa - give them 10-15 years and they could well be knocking on the door of 700 BEDs.

Keep watching population growth. The "suburban circle" of the Des Moines metro continues to expand outward - don't be surprised to see towns like Granger, Perry, Pella, Knoxville, Adel, Carlisle, etc. become hotspots for growth.

I doubt SE Polk will split. They worked too hard years ago to put that school together. If they do split all the towns would about have to go their own ways and it would cost a lot of money.

Cedar Falls and Waterloo West are going to blow up size wise in the next 10 years as well. They aren't going to have any other choice going forward, they're going to have to split the top 30-36 into a Class 5A.

As long as we're talking about the east, how will the new Iowa City Liberty HS change the enrollment numbers in that area?

Linn-Mar is also already getting huge. However, I think they're planning on splitting soon; same thing with CR Prairie.

My sources tell me that the proposed split is dead in the water for now and that schools will likely wait until the current scheduling cycle ends (after 2015-16 season) before making any changes to the current CIML.

It sounds like the whole split was moving too quickly for some of the metro schools and the AD's voiced their opinions to slow things down with regard to splitting up the CIML.

Just got an email from the Indianola school district that said exactly that (in regard to Indianola's decision). They are calling the decision "delayed" until the 2 year schedule is up.

Up until the late sixties DM East was in the Big 6 with Fort Dodge, Mason City, Cedar Falls, and East and West Wateloo.
Big 6 then became Big 8 with DM East dropping and joining new Metro conference. Ames, Newton and Marshalltown joined to form Big 8, followed by the new and now defunct Waterloo Central.
Newton dropped in early 70's because they were not competetive, but a few years later they were state FB champs (go figure)

I wonder how would that work - a 4A school joining a conference with 3A schools?

Wouldn't be any different than the Racoon River was for years up until last year.
Boone was 4A playing a conference of all 3A schools.

The Little Hawkeye league (except for Pella Christian is 2A) is perfect for Indianola.

DCG and Norwalk will probably eventually be 4A anyway in a few years.
The Towns have the same feel (Newton, Osky, Pella, Grinnell etc)

If they join the league would have 8 teams for basketball for example. That would be 14 Games in league play. Then they could schedule 7 - 4A Schools to play non conference.

Football is districts so it doesn't matter.
Sports like softball seem to play like 40 games for some reason..lol so I am sure they can manage also.
