Advice please. We are getting ready to put in a 6 foot wood privacy fence and would just like to know a reasonable cost per foot for installation for West Des Moines. TIA!

Two years ago we got a bid from Ames Door & Fence to replace a 48' run of cedar fence that finally gave up the ghost. It was plain Jane fence - not as decorative as what had been there. They wanted something like $7,200. I nearly lost my mind. We bought $1,800 of engineered wood fence, etc., at Home Depot and did it ourselves. I am now convinced that the mafia runs the fence market.

Best advice I can give is don't put in a wood fence. It will never look as good as the day it's put in, even with annual maintenance and repairs. We put in a white vinyl fence for privacy and black aluminum in the front yard. Price isn't much higher and it'll look good for years with no maintenance.

Neighbors put in pre-made cedar panels from Lowes last year and that crap is already twisted, cupping, and splitting.

I'd echo this but I also am biased towards wood fencing because I cut the absolute bejeezus out of myself ripping one down a few years ago.

A friend of mine hired someone to do the posts then we did all the rest. Getting the posts set is the hardest part. After that it is just moving boards and shooting nails.

We put in our own 6 ft privacy fence, bought the panels from Home Depot 3 years ago and they are already falling apart.

The cost of vinyl may be a little more upfront but definitely the best in the long run. I wouldn't even contemplate green treated wood as this will twist, cup and crack in a short period of time. Cedar is the better option if you are stuck on doing wood but like others have said, the look of it will deteriorate.

We're slowly putting in a cedar privacy fence. It costs us about 50 bucks per 8 foot section for the wood, screws, and dowels from Menard's. We decided to attach 2x4's to our existing fence with dowels & wood glue, with 1x2x8' slats spaced evenly up to 6-7 feet high. Each section needs 1 12' 2x4 and ~14 8 foot 1x2s. I'm partial to wood fences (aesthetics), but you have to be willing to put in the work to maintain them.

I will add that the engineered wood fence we put in looks like the day we put it in and doesn't look too fakey-wood. I can post a picture if you want. I think we got the 'walnut color' so it looks like it's stained.

I would be interested in seeing a picture of the fence and who installed it for you.

These are 6' panels, special ordered through Home Depot. Go to the custom order desk and they have a catalog (or at least that's how it worked when we did it). We installed ourself because we just gave up trying to find someone for a reasonable price. -- The color on the close up is off, the distant shot is more true to life.

My installed 6 ft high cedar fence around the backyard from 7 years ago cost twenty bucks a linear foot installed. The minimum installation charge was a 60 ft run.

I have worked with American Fence on the last few commercial jobs I have been on and they seem to do a fairly good job for commercial fencing; not sure on residential

I did inquire this week on 4' tall vinyl fence and they are running a 10% off sale and I think they are looking at $12/lf with gates installed. I figured 250lf with three (3) 4' swing gates.

We aren't going to be complete building until August but they wanted 60% down payment to hold that price and I figured I'd wait the 3-4 months as the $320 isn't worth putting 60% down to me when I haven't solicited additional pricing from other local fencing contractors.

Thanks! Our job is pretty simple -- bought a new house that is 90% fenced, just need to finish off between the garage & house for the dog. It will involve putting posts in the existing driveway concrete though, so I don't want to mess with it.

Shouldn't be an issue for them...they had an auger/pulverizer bit that will drill through concrete and when they pour the concrete for the posts they will finish it at top of slab...we had several posts we had to install through concrete gutter/curb that had asphalt drive and it turned out great so not too much of a concern
