I am 44 years old and from my first hand experience I believe that every generation thinks the next generation after them is a bunch of slothful slackers. Can you imagine if any of us went back 125 years (5 generations by the generally accepted definition of a generation being 25 years). I'll guarantee you that the man of 1885 would not want to listen to your whining about having to walk behind a horse-drawn ploy all day to raise the crops you needed to eat instead of making the leisurely trip to Whole Foods. And the woman of 1885 would not want to hear the whining about having to kill the chicken and spend nearly all day preparing the meal for the evening instead of running by HyVee to pick up a WonderRoast chicken and a package of ready-to-eat potato salad.

This is a great point and I agree. Technology continues to advance making certain things 'easier to do', allowing for us as citizens to reach our goals faster than past generations would have to.

BF himself has said he is extremely hard on his players and he will by the time they leave make them the best basketball players they can be. Hes hard on them..... thats a common denominator. Hes also stated that Lacey and him had a bad relationship the first few years because he had to be on her case so much. She stuck it out... my point was most kids now wont stick it out. And I think bring up the WBB team and BF backs my point perfectly.

This illustrates what a great diversionary tactic Pollard's comments were. Instead of focusing on the reality of ISU having a MBB coach that is simply not getting the job done and actually regressing our program...we are now engaged in generational arguments here.

As for your comments that I highlighted...how do you know these kids are leaving because they don't feel they are being given "special" treatment? The answer is...you don't know...so this is not an "obvious truth" but rather an assumption on your part.

And your second comment clearly identifies another diversionary tactic employed by JP...even our successful WBB program is having these transfer issues. The reality is that these WBB transfers are not an issue because that program is having and has had success.

The bottom line is that all of this discussion is detracting from the blatant facts of the matter:

1) Our MBB remains under the direction of a coach that is proving with each passing day that he is not getting the job done...no winning records, abysmal conference records, and nowhere near postseason.

2) While there is a rise in transfers throughout college MBB...our program is averaging far more of this than the typical school and even worse we tend to have contributing players leave.

Maybe Pollard should really take a stand against this plague of transfer-itis...kick all kids currently on ISU teams that transfered off their respective teams immediately and put up the "you're not welcome here" sign for all future transfers by enacting a policy that ISU will no longer accept any new transfers. Come on JP...have the courage of your convictions.

Will that happen...nope...this is just a patently obvious attempt at diverting attention away from the real problem...GREG MCDERMOTT.

Nobody ever said that a coach doesn't also need to be a good communicator and often times a good psychologist as he will always have different personality types to deal with, as does any manager. Kids come from different backgrounds and knowing how to communicate and motivate individuals is what good coaches can do. Those that can't or won't are left behind.

I think Jamie basically states the obvious but misses the main underlying point. Everybody who pays attention to college basketball knows every school has transfers. What he fails to mention to the public, which I hope is to not shed bad light on us and not that he doesn't see it, is that we basically lead all BCS schools in transfers in the last four years.

Let's take a look. Below are all the players who have ever gotten season playing time for McDermott. I have bolded the ones who have transferred, quit, been kicked off the team, or gone to the NBA. The ones who have been kicked off are italicized:

Mike Taylor
Wesley Johnson

Rahshon Clark
Corey McIntosh
Dodie Dunson
Jiri Hubalek
Jessan Gray
Cory Johnson
Ross Marsden
Brock Jacobson
Chris Ceaser
Mark Currie
Dustin Streff
Jeff Bergstrom
Mike Smith
Bryan Petersen
Craig Brackins
Diante Garrett
Sean Haluska
Alex Thompson
Cameron Lee
Charles Boozer
Clayton Vette
Marcus Brister
Lucca Staiger
Jamie Vanderbeken
Justin Hamilton
Wes Eikmeier
Dominique Buckley
Clinton Mann
Marquis Gilstrap
Scott Christopherson
Chris Colvin
LaRon Dendy
Alex Dorr
L.A. Pomlee

SO, 17 players of 36 total who have ever gotten regular season playing time for Greg McDermott have either transferred, quit the team, or been kicked off. In other words, if you were to pick any two given players, almost 1 of them every time would have quit the team early. Also, 6 of the 19 players who didn't quit or transfer? They were walk-ons.

So Jamie, you can continue to blame the kids for leaving, but I'm pretty sure when almost half of all players transfer? It's the coaching staff and athletic department's problem moreso than a kid not getting his way. Please find me any other BCS school that has this many transfers in the last four years.

You noted it originally, but in this sentence where you are making your point you forgot, "Or declared for the NBA". Yes... I realize it's only 1. But there is absolutely no way in my opinion that this 1 (Craig Brackins) can count as a negative. Many players come to a college in hopes that they go to the NBA, and declaring as a graduate is statistically not as good of a decision as declaring before you graduate.

Also, transferred/quit the team is a completely different stat than being kicked off the team. So 2 more on the list don't support the ultimate point your trying to make (in my opinion) as you're final statements are discussing transfers(12)/quitters(2).

Other than those 3, the other 14 of 36 are very valid arguments.

Also, just for accuracy purposes... I don't think Marsden was kicked off (as you have him in italics). He quit basketball in general (and thus quit the team).

Yes, the Brackins part can be noted as both a positive and negative. We've had Mike Taylor, Craig Brackins, and Wes Johnson under GMac. Mike Taylor played in the NBA, Brackins will probably be drafted, Wes Johnson certainly will be. That means we've had 3 NBA caliber players on ISU and we couldn't even record a winning seasons with them. When it comes down to Brackins being drafted and whatever, I think he will and scouts will give him some slack because he was "on a team which wasn't too good." I can see that one coming from scouts.

As far as kicked off vs. transferred/quit..that is still almost 40% of players. Meaning at that rate, from every 15 man squad, 6 players would leave the team and it wouldn't be because they were seniors.

Ross marsden thing I got "confused" by my own notation :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh: sorry

Get what exactly? Do you understand the numbers? What exactly do you get that those of us that see the program as a national leader in transfers, don't get? Please be very specific. I want numbers to support your position. I want logic, not this cryptic crap you put up. Give us exactly why we should be less than unhappy right now. Be specific.
This is the third time this is being posted. I am very disappointed in KG...he specifically asked what I wanted to know: I outlined exactly and he lacks the courage to answer...

Fair enough and you make valid points. I just get very anal about the usage of statistics (being a math guy)... as too often on TV people use them to prove a point... but knowing the entire story behind the stats one might not be so easily swayed.

I just want to thank my fellow CF's in refuting the continuos crock of crap that is coming from JP, GMAC, and their minions. One thing that I appreciate here is the high level of passion, knowledge, pride, and intelligence from you all. Please do not give up your efforts; otherwise we'll become the Cubs, a team with no reason to improve.

I am passionate about ISU and I agree with Pollard. If I could have a discussion with GMac I would tell him that he needs to kick some *** this year and all will be forgotten.

First he needs to refill the squad.

Since I know your an Excel know it all please adjust your numbers.

Brackins should not be included in bold this list. Having a kid go pro is a good thing. I'd love to have that problem every year.

You are absolutely correct on the rest (you don't need to fudge the numbers though). Mac has an unusually high number of transfers.

Has anyone run the numbers on teams with transfers and the breakdown? I can only assume we are #1 and probably 70% of the next 9 were in the tourney during the last 4 years.

I applaud Pollard for stating it's a win or else situation next year but he gets a Fail on trying to spin this transfer crap.

It is very disappointing that JP is forcing fans to play the money game- that we must first stop renewing tickets before a change is made. It shouldn't come to that. It is a betrayal of everything Jamie Pollard has earned our trust with.

Most people on this site spoke with our check books when JP asked us to step up in order to stay competitive. Whether people went from giving $0 to $50, or they went from giving $1000 to $5000, most of us did step up. That, after being criticized by JP for not thinking big and for not believing that it could happen in Ames, Iowa.

What is JP's the next call to step up going to be based on? Even BVD could have increased our budget if it was based on a lie.

So, I'm bringing this back up here to prevent hi-jacking a positive thread about football.

Did anyone notice how the football players are being very praised by everyone in the just got a call for renewing my season tickets?

I've seen multiple posts in that thread stating it was classy and gracious of the players. I also saw a post that one of the football players said it was the players idea to call and thank the season ticket holders.

I guess the football team must be a part of a different generation than the basketball players because the football team seems to be the complete opposite of entitled. And none of them seemed to leave when things started going badly (Chiz years and Chiz quitting).

Mr. Pollard owes an apology for lumping an entire generation in with one teams problems. That or I fear what the nation will be like when guys like our football players are in charge. People calling customers to thank them for their business and support. Man, we're really going down the crapper.

That is the dumbest thing I've heard. Don't you realize a person setting an example for these athletes (AD) should teach them it is ok to make disparaging generalizations about groups of people when your target audience will agree with your generalizations. The young men and women should especially take note this is a useful tactic when making an excuse or deflecting blame for a larger problem. Hopefully JP can ignore your excellent post and sweep that little tidbit about the existence of resilient, hard working and appreciative young men under the rug before folks make that same connection.

It would be interesting to hear him respond to your message.
