Do we know which of the current players and new recruits will be in Ames this summer? Which summer leagues will they be playing in?

A lot of ISU players usually play in the Capital City League in the summer in Des Moines. I saw Carr play there before his freshman year, Stinson, Blalock, Neal, Damian Staple, Reggie George to name a few have played in it in recent years. The Cap City league usually is mostly current or former Drake, ISU, and I think maybe even a few UNI players plus some local HS prospects as well.

the more the better. It would be great for them to start building relationships with each other and the coaches as much as is allowed in the summer. With so many new faces, building team unity will be very important. Thanks for the information.

Re: Summer League and GMac

FWIW - either last year or 2 years ago I heard some comments from GMac regarding his UNI players that participated in the Prime Time League. Basically, he was all for it and he wanted his players focusing their efforts on improving their game. In and of itself, that sounds like the same thing you would hear from any coach. But, what caught my attention was that he was more concerned about his players improving on DEFENSE and REBOUNDING. From everything I've heard, that is unheard of from the summer leagues. Apparently GMac sat down with each player individually and laid out items for those players to concentrate on. I wonder how much he is going to encourage players to participate in the PTL.

I think that it is good for some of these players to get together and play for fun for once, but it is also very important that they work on those skills like rebounding, defense and other things beside scoring. It is also a good time to learn about the players they will be playing with this winter. Its also a good time for the new players to build confidence in their game. I would love to see McIntosh and Taylor on the same team this summer so that they can learn to complement each other just as good as Atinson and Blalock did. And i want all our bigmen on different teams or playing against bigger stronger guys to help them prepare for the conference season.

Do we have any indication yet who will be playing? Does anyone know when the Cap City League Draft is? How about when the league starts play? Seems like it should be coming up pretty soon. I would imagine all four returners and Alex Thompson will play because all are based in Iowa, except Clark, who I believe is sticking around Ames. If Taylor and McIntosh are going to be in town I would hope they would play. That just leaves the two Johnsons and our walk-ons. Jacobsen is another Iowa guy. Drake will be a much improved team this year and has many experienced players returning so I would hope the league will continue to become more competitive.

We probably know that MCD told our 3 bigs to practice their rebounding and how to takie a charge.

the Cap City league and Prime Time League are good, but have you seen any of these games?? Rob Kampman, who is basically my basketball mentor...played at Wichita State..from Forest City, anyways, i quized him about these games and he said its tough to really work on skills in these games becuz everyone just wants to do alot of scoring and have fun. he said they are great to get a pick up game going and just play during the summer against good competition at your level, but it is difficult to work on your individual skills. those mainly come from your individual workouts with your training partner or whoever. i am sure Jiri, Ross, and Jessan are doing these individual things and will try to put them into the summer leagues, but when everyone else is playing lazy D, cherry picking, etc, its hard to stick to your individual plan.

as far as the taking charge things go. those are just pluses of being in good solid defensive position, help side or one on one. we dont want our bigs flopping and getting cheap fouls or giving up clean looks. good defensive position to contest a shot, help on penetration (something we were horrible at last year), and box out. if we can improve on that, we will be a solid defensive unit.

Hope to see this fellow recruited successfully for next year and see him in the summer of 2007:

"With the Chicago Jaguars coming in as defending champions of the Five-Star & New Heights Basketball City Classic, a lot of eyes were placed on them to see if they can duplicate their run from last year, but alas their run ended on Sunday losing a tough one to Team Odom 83-76 in the preliminary round of the playoffs. The Jaguars have an elite core of Division I prospects and while they fell short of their goal in going back-to-back, they did not disappoint. On Friday night against Harlem's Pride, DePaul recruit Nyal "Mac" Koshwal was a one man wrecking crew. He was dominant in taking the ball to the hoop. He is like a bull in a china shop, as he is not afraid of contact. He dazzled the crowd with many rim rocking dunks."

He is a recruit target fopr DePaul, ISU and others over there in Illinois.

Nice picture of him: http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=171&p=2&c=533534
