Boy, your options are limited in Indianola. There are tons of food vendors out at the balloon field, but if you are wanting to get away from the field your only real options are:

-- Sports Page, good sports bar American food.
-- La Casa, decent Mexican food
-- Battles BBQ, same chain as the one in Ames, not quite as good.
-- Cals, a little American Bar and Grill type place. To be honest, I am from Indianola and I forget its there...not great food.
-- Brick House, a chicago style pizza place. I have only ate there once since it opened and the pizza was pretty good, but I don't hear great things from alot of people in Indianola.
-- Wynns Pizza and Steakhouse, I love this place. They have very, very tasty pizza, a nice little salad bar and a variety of non-pizza meals. It wont look like much when you get there, and wont look much better when you get inside, but it is some good food.
-- Pete's Pizza, all of the same things I said about Wynns could be said about Petes.

My recommendations, eat at either Sports Page, Wynn's or Pete's...or drive to Des Moines.

Thanks for the info. I may drive to southern Des Moines, but didn't want to backtrack if possible since I'll be coming from Des Moines to the festival, then dinner, then the fireworks.

Go on a night that they do Night Glow. They tether all of the balloons once it gets dark and you can walk around on the field and talk to the pilots. It is really cool to see the balloons glowing in the dark, and if you have children they would love it.

We are going Saturday. I'm not sure if they'll have a night glow, but they'll have fireworks.

True Story: I lived about 3 blocks from Crouse Cafe until I was 18 and never ate there.

I've eaten there twice, but my grandma loved it.

As for what to do at the balloon field, I always remember just sitting on a blanket or lawn chairs and talking with family.

I'll be there at somepoint Saturday....my cousin has his own balloon.

Saturday will be awesome if the weather holds up. The "mass ascension" on the first night is really cool to see. If the weather is looking at all iffy I wouldn't pay to go out to the balloon fields. Any substantial breeze and they don't go up.

Hmmmm so I need to choose between Crouse Cafe, Wynns Pizza, or Pete's pizza.

I'm thinking we'll go around 3-3:30 to see some of the arts/crafts. Hang around until 6 for the opening ceremonies/night time launch, go to one of the said restaurants, then come back for fireworks.

If you drive 69 toward South Rigde Mall there is a Popeye's near there. 15-25 minute drive (depends on speed mainly)

Don't they have a Quiznos too? Personally, I'd vote for A&W. It's been too long since eating there last.

The A&W in Indianola is good. I also have eaten at Cal's. Was ok, but not great. Sports Page is my favorite there. As for the balloon festival....i haven't been there in 6 years and wasn't overly impressed. I know some people that absolutely LOVE going to it yearly, but it just wasn't for me.
