I sort of posted about this in another thread, but was just looking for some insight on people who have gone up to Ames on a party bus for game days.

We have a party bus of ~40 people heading up to Ames on Saturday (departure time probably between 7-9 am). I was just wondering where people think we could park the bus to set up a tailgate? Or if that is probably not an option for the Iowa game due to the crowd, are there lots we could potentially purchase a parking pass and park the bus in? Any other tips from people who have gone up on a party bus?

Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

I would try to get in line no later than 4AM for the student lots or Vet Med. That's going to be your best bet for that many people and not having parking passes. That how we have done it in the past. Good luck!

It is extremely unlikely that there will be many spots left by 8 am. If you get to ames by 7 you may have a chance, but I would even doubt t that. I would recommend starting your party earlier, getting to ames at 5, and park in one of the grass lots if they're open.

They might be too wet but sounds like they will do whatever possible to have them open.

I know three separate friend groups going up to Ames from DSM in a party bus before tailgating. I guess I missed when this became a thing? Does sound like a lot of fun/deadly.

I wonder if you can send someone up early to walk up, pay for a bus, and then set up a tent or something to save the spot for the bus to come later.

A party bus parked in C1 along Lincoln Way for the UNI game. Probably have to prearrange it with the athletic department.

If you don’t have a pass there’s no way I’d do it on the time table you mention. I’d be to Ames by 5 for sure if I didn’t have a pass.

At one time you had to have a car present at the lot gate to pay for a parking spot. Maybe this has changed.

If I didn't have a pass, I'd be to Ames on Friday night. The night before the 2007 game we went down about midnight and were well south of the creek through the student lots.

Little more hype for this one.

I would say your best bet is to arrange for the bus to drop you off at the tailgate lots and pick you up at an arranged meeting spot. There's no way in hell you're parking in a public lot.

Yep. Send a few cars to grab spaces together. Then unload the bus from the street.

Yeah, that was kind what I was thinking/afraid of. I had done a party bus a few years ago, and we are able to park in the student lots with ease, but there were also probably 70,000 fewer people in Ames that day than there will be on Saturday. I just wanted to double check in case there were any options I wasn't thinking of. I usually just park in C6 with my car and hang out over there, so I never really think about other stuff

G2/G3 (Iowa game only)
Fans wanting to park RVs in the Vet Med lot for the Iowa State/Iowa game will line up Friday afternoon from 1:30pm-5:30pm in lots G4/G5. Vehicles staged in this lot will move across S. 16th street up to Vet Med starting at 5:30pm. Fans wanting to park in lots G2/G3 for the game will line up in lot G4 from 6:30pm-midnight. Vehicles staged in this lot will move across S. 16th street to lots G2/G3 prior to the public lots opening on Saturday, Sept. 14th.

  • Each vehicle must have a valid driver with it at all times or the vehicle is subject to being towed. If the driver is not ready or prepared to move the vehicle when G2/G3 opens, the vehicle will lose its place in line and be held to the end of the staging queue.
  • No sleeping outside of the vehicles
  • No tent like structures or other obstructions can be set up anywhere in the lot
  • No glass bottles allowed in the lot
  • All vehicles are to be moved when the lot is cleared
  • Any vehicles left in the staging area after the lot is cleared will be towed
  • No fires or cooking outside vehicle while in line
  • No alcohol or tailgating allowed
  • This area is being used for a staging area at this time and is not currently a tailgating area
  • Tailgating is not allowed until the lots officially open
  • Lot G3 will be filled first and all vehicles will be force parked
Sounds like if you want into the student lots for tailgating, you should send a couple people up on Friday with tailgate gear to get and stay in line and just have the party bus drop off and pick up. Good Luck and Stay Safe.
