I really wish I was making this up, but it's true.
First, before the meet started the group I was with were just talking amongst ourselves. A couple in our group are Hawkeye fans. As we were talking we overheard the conversation right behind us. They were all wearing black and gold. Anyway, they were talking about Cael when one of them pops up and asks, "Do you think he would've started at Iowa?"
My buddy, the Hawkeye, and I just looked at each other. I think we both wanted to turn around and start beating on these guys. I wish I could say that I'm surprised.
At intermission the same boneheads behind us were talking. When they introduced the 1973 squad I got two doozies out of them. After the group in attendance was introduced on of the two asked, "Why didn't they introduce Gable?" Hey moron, it's the 1973 squad. Come on. You really can't be that stupid. Gable wrestled in Munich in 1972. Know the history.
A few seconds after that came, "I can't believe they haven't won a national title since 1973." OH....MY.....GOD!!! Are you kidding me? I know it's been awhile, but 34 years? By this time I just lowered my head and shook it. There are sone stupid people out there.
My favorite of the day came from one of our own. I turned on 1460 and caught the very end of the game. Coach Fennelly came over for the post game interview and asked how the wrestlers did. When he was told the outcome his response was priceless. "Cael's just sandbagging." Loved it. He went onto say that it's nice to win this but it doesn't matter until later anyway. I just thought that was great.
