Based on Robert Smith’s impression of “The Stranger” by Albert Camus. The song drew criticism upon release, with claims it promoted violence against Arabs. Backlash came twice more, during Persian Gulf War and following 9/11 attacks.

Let me bring some hip-hop into the mix. Throughout this song, Chance uses the story of Peter Pan to illustrate how he and his girl have grown apart.

"When did you change?
Wendy, you've aged
I thought you'd never grow up
I thought you'd never
Window closed, Wendy got old
I was too late, I was too late
A shadow of what I once was"

references / inspired by Lord of the Rings Books

Twas in the darkest depths of Mordor
I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up
And slipped away with her

I remember when I was a kid and was one of the few in my school that knew what they were referencing because I had read the books. Before the movies came out.....

Steppenwolf, taken from the Herman Hesse novel.

Instead of posting the obvious hits, here are 2 other solid tracks.

(Observation, this could be confused with a Deep Purple song from the same period, and by extension, vice-versa):

(B-side of “Magic Carpet Ride”):

I'm going to go spin Synchronicity as well. Enjoy. BTW, which is better, Synchronicy I or II?

FWIW, I might despise that damn 500 miles song as much as the EIU fightsong as it reminds me of a couple weeks I was stuck in Lincoln, NE back in 1993 and the local station had it on heavy rotation.

I prefer Synchronicity I

Obligatory Dylan song.

Goes down all sorts of alleys including biblical and references to T.S. Eliot...also worth mentioning the 'Dylan' in the name is reportedly after poet Dylan Thomas.

I thought I was going to get away with a first posting of Steppenwolf, but Cyclone 500 beat me to it. Here's another tune from that literary band:

I've never indulged the band's full catalog, but a Greatest Hits I had a few years ago actually has some solid stuff beyond the 2 Biggies. It's been a while since I listened to much of it, so I'm not sure how dated it sounds.

Billy Pilgrim. Named after the main character in “Slaughterhouse-Five.” Musically, I never latched onto the group; The Jayhawks had covered some of the same ground, but did it earlier and more effectively, to my ears. But I give kudos for the band's nod to Vonnegut.

Indirect literary connection to the Stephen King novel of the same name. To summarize, apparently Dee Dee penned the song after King have him a copy of the novel. Then, Ramones recorded it for the movie adaptation.

Steppenwolf Live (double record) was the one I would always return to. Fake applause and all, the band is in fine form--and they had more in their pipes than Born to be Wild.
