Welcome back to “On That Note,” CF’s weekly go-to for music-listening and discussion, hosted by @MeanDean, @CycloneRulzzz and cyclones500.

In June 2020, we did a topic called “Busted Rhymes,” focused on weak/bad rhymes and lyrics. This is the opposite concept: Songs that contain lyrical excerpts or rhyming couplets/combos you find inspiring, compelling, clever, thought-provoking, amusing (in a positive sense), memorable … or something you like “just because it sounds good.”

Basic guidelines:
  • We prefer to keep the references brief: stick to a line or two, perhaps a verse or chorus … not the entire lyrics.
  • No requirement that it contains a rhyme, but “good/unique rhyming” counts for a lot.
  • Multiple excerpts from the same song are allowed, as you see fit. You may cite a song already posted, as long as you specify a separate lyric.
  • Encouraged: Describe WHY you like the lyric.
  • Along with your clip, include approximate point in the song when it occurs.
My first sample or two coming in a follow-up post.

I could use countless samples from The Replacements/Westerberg. I’ll select a couple from The Mats, at random, to get us rolling. (I'm likely to have more Paul as we go along).

Each has two excerpts.

:07 and 1:07
“I’ll write you a letter tomorrow / Tonight, I can’t hold a pen.”
“Hurry up, hurry up, ain’t you had enough of this stuff? / Ashtray floors, dirty clothes and filthy jokes.”

“Anywhere you hang yourself is home.” (Approx :15)
“The windows are dirty / let’s hope it rains” (Approx :54)

Two tracks from “Sgt. Pepper” that are mostly about phrasing/wordplay, not "meaning."

Line itself isn’t anything special, it’s where Paul breaks/pauses within it — sounds like it's saying one thing, but in-context it's something else. (First occurrence approx 40 seconds)

“And it really doesn’t matter / if I’m wrong I’m right / where I belong I’m right / where I belong.”

Example of "sounds the same/not the same (My guess is Lennon wrote it this way intentionally)

“Somebody needs to know the time / glad that I’m here” ... (“The time” and “that I’m” sound the same.) (1:35)

Not mentioned in the intro: Samples don’t have to be monumental, earth-shattering or award-winning.

I’m going to keep posting and we’ll get some momentum eventually, I hope. :)

(Approx 30 seconds)

“But I'm half-lit / I can't dance for sh*t / But I see what I want, I go after it.”

(Approx 44 seconds)

“I quit my job blowing leaves / telephone bills up my sleeves”

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away / Now it looks as though they’re here to stay / Oh, I believe in yesterday

And when the brokenhearted people / Living in the world agree / There will be an answer, let it be

There's nothing you can do that can't be done / Nothing you can sing that can't be sung"

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make

Clarence Carter "Strokin" NSFW !!!

The first time I ever heard this, I was on a business trip to Macon GA with a future CEO....in the early 1990's...

I stroke it to the east
And I stroke it to the west
And I stroke it to the woman that I love the best

You make love, you break love, it's all the same"

"There must be some kind of way outta here Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion I can't get no relief" (This entire song really.)

"Come mothers and fathers, throughout the land,

And don’t criticize, what you can’t understand."

“You tell yourself you’re not my kind/But you don’t even know your mind.”

Gonna wear no socks and shoes/With nothing to do but feed/All the kangaroos.”

The verse after the solo in "Time" by Pink Floyd
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
