One name to keep an eye on is Sy Chatman from Buffalo. Should have another year of eligibility due to injuries annd COVID and originally from Minneapolis area. Was high school and college teammates with Curtis Jones and would be a great addition to the front court.

He's complicated but fairly certain he's out of eligibility. This is his 6th year in college. He played in only 6 games in 2020 and 4 games in 2021 so maybe a medical waiver in there? Has transferred twice and used a redshirt last year.

I think he'd be fine?

18-19: True freshman
19-20: Played 6 games, all before Christmas, probably can get a medical redshirt
20-21: COVID year
21-22: Effectively a true sophomore if the previous two seasons don't count
22-23: Redshirt
23-24: Effectively a redshirt junior

Right and we are in the era of guys playing like 7 years. It would all come down to a waiver. My thought is, have him commit to Kansas or Duke, then apply for the waiver, once he receives the waiver, he commits to us. The thinking is he will easily get a waiver from the NCAA if he commits to one of those schools first.

With Jones I think his role is and always has been clear. He's a big.

All the guys I listed have undefined roles. Watson is still undefined after 2 seasons in the program. Is Paveletzke a 2 or a 1? Biliew a 4 or a 3? Etc.
Couldn't disagree more. His role is fairly clearly defined as a defensive stopper and sub for Milan. Adding his blocks, steals and assists compared to turnovers is a 4:1 ratio meaning he is a safe bet to have on the floor at key times. I get that offensively he is not a "shot hunter" but that isn't the role he has been asked to play as he has only a little over an attempt per game, but is shooting above 50%. Like Omaha, he is stuck behind three "old men" seniors and a top 50 recruit in Milan, but pulls more minutes this year than a McDonald's All-American in Omaha. He is a "3" who plays big enough he has drawn minutes at the "4", and that positional flexibility lets TJ go "small" with Watson at the 4, or "Big" with him at the 3.

I remember when Tim Floyd was asked about letting Jacy Holloway shoot more, and he responded by asking who on the team you wanted to shoot less so Holloway could have those shots? I think that seems like the current thought with DeMarion. It would be great if he could stick the open three from the corner, but like Ward, they aren't running many plays for him on offense, rather his shots are primarily on put backs.

Ah, yeah, that might be different. Though if that's the COVID season, maybe it doesn't matter? If he would've kept playing it still wouldn't have counted towards his eligibility.

he left UMASS in dec 2019 so thats why he only played 6 games that year
not getting a med redshirt for that season (2019-20 and doubt he gets a waiver for sitting out 2020-21 for personal reasons

thinking hes used up all his eligibility

If we get him can we change his first name to Cy instead of Sy? Just for one season?

I know speculation on potential departures is a bit bunk around here, but for the sake of conversation, I could see as many as three scholarships come open at the conclusion of our season.

Paveletzke: Has come around a bit lately which you love to see, but he is a Sophomore that will have a hard time supplanting any of the other 3 guards in front of him for playing time, regardless of his improvement. He is in the same class as Tamin, one season behind Gilbert, and would have another year of sitting behind C. Jones assuming he takes a covid year. So at best, he sticks around and hopes he can start as a senior in 2025-26, yet even then, a starting backcourt of both he and Tamin is unattractive due to them both being on the small side. Take into additional consideration that waiting in the wings will be two talented freshman guards in Hamilton and Indrusaitus. If the end goal for Pav is to be a 6th man on a good Big 12 team perhaps he sticks it out. Otherwise I feel like he is currently auditioning for playing time at another school with our remaining games this season.

Watson: With Watson, I kind of just feel like time is running out. He seems like he has a P6 motor and athletic ability, but the skill level just isn't there. Depending what his career aspirations are, I could see him looking to go down a level or two where he can compete a little bit better offensively and become a small ball 4, unless he's happy playing out his days as a Cyclone averaging 10 minutes a game.

Biliew: I hope he sticks around, in fact I'd love all of these guys to, but the reality of the current landscape of the sport tells me I should know better by now. Omaha will have a big decision to make in the offseason. Seems like any conversation about him entering the draft and being a one and done no matter what have cooled substantially since the start of the season, so now it begs the question that if he does come back to college for another year, will it be at Iowa State? Or does he harbor some resentment for TJ and the program for putting a very large damper on and/or destroying his desired career path?

Honorable mention for Curtis Jones: he seems least likely of this group to leave, and has a covid year to use. To me he is back unless he wants to try and become a starter somewhere (although he could start for us next season IMO) or just wants to move on with his life after basketball.
I mean just based on the the percentages there is going to be a transfer or two. It would be very unusual if there wasn't.

Ah, I assumed that was an injury. Yeah, he's not going to have another year, then.

It helped he had a great game tonight

Reverse jinx worked again. On Saturday it was Pav. Who should I do next?
Gee I hope Pav stays. Tough tho to be a role player I suppose, even on a successful P5 team. Probably(?) wants to play more minutes next year which he would get outside the big12 especially since when he goes inside he often gets blocked/stopped and if switched on defense the mismatch is kinda detrimental. Carry on with your reverse jinx......;)
