Fran has a knack for promising players certain things during the recruitment process. He promised Woodbury he'd start every single game for them once he stepped on campus, even though Woodbury had an offer from UNC and Virginia. From what I heard is that Woodbury got complacent and stopped putting in the work because he knew that he'd continue to start and play.

This is completely different than a coach saying "I can see you being a big contributor for us", or anything along those lines. I was told this was a mutual decision where Woodbury would only go to Iowa if Fran would start him right away.
I'm not sure why you rated this as funny @BLHawk

The part about Woodbury getting complacent and not working hard.
Maybe working hard wasn't the right wording, but complacent was. He knew that he was going to start no matter what and that's definitely not want you want to have in a player.

Adam Woodbury averaged 4.9 ppg, 5.7 ppg, 6.6 ppg, and then 7.2 ppg. He played in every single game his entire college career. That is not significant improvement at all as far as offense goes. On defense he provided a big body but he was absolutely atrocious on the offensive end.

Not going to argue with you about Woodbury in a thread dedicated to ISU recruiting. That is why I simply marked "disagree" with your last post.

Fair points, All I’m saying is i heard from someone who’s been recruiting b-ball players for a long time that mr Foster is way more involved and overbearing than he needs to be. You can be involved in your child’s college decision, athlete or not, but he’s a bit much.

Maybe Xavier is fine with his dad being as involved as he is. It sounds like its a big decision for him and his family and it isn't up to you or me or anonymous recruiters to decide how involved a parent should be. Unless there is something nefarious the dude isn't able to accomplish because of it.

I like making fun of Woodbury as much as anybody on here -- I do not think Iowa has ever presented us a funnier lolcow than Mr. T-Rex Arms himself on the court.

However, he did improve on the court over time. Notice his PRPG! goes from 0.6 as a freshman to 2.3 as a senior (compared to Jacobson last year, who was a surprise 3.6 for his junior year). It looks like that mostly comes through a higher offensive rating, which looks like that comes through a combination of a higher percentage from the field and a higher percentage from the line gradually over time. He was terrible to start and became, well, okay.

He was also a big body and good rebounder in the middle. He went from awful on offense to mediocre over his career, turning him from a scrub to a marginal starter.

LOL Heading into year #10...

"I think Fran has actually done a reasonable job. He's made the round of 32 three times after inheriting a dumpster fire, and narrowly missed the Sweet 16 this year.

I think he's returned the program to Tom Davis levels. Getting rid of Frsn would be revisiting that history and likely set the program back.

I just believe this recruiting cycle is a pivotal stretch. The 2021 team could be Fran's best roster if Joe returns. Having a player like Foster to replace Kriener next year would be huge."

I don't really want to turn this into a Woodbury thread, but here's my last little note. He was probably one of the worst starting P-5 big men offensively during his junior and senior year. His career high was 16 and he did that two times. His rebounding numbers were high because he was 7'0" and played a crap load. His field goal percentage went up by making .7 more shots on .8 more shots. Most of that increase of PRPG probably came from his FT percentage going from .510 to .700.

All good points -- but I would not dismiss the increase in FT% and especially for a big man. Part of the difference between Marial Shayok and Lindell Wigginton for us last year was Shayok was 87.8% from the line and Wigginton was 72.0% from the line.

I credit him for getting better at his FT percentage, but dear lord if you're only taking 2.7 free throws a game, I hope you could make around 2, which is what he did @ 1.9.
