Its the interaction between structural components as their moisture content changes due to temperature. The "nails" thing is a misnomer, as if that were the case, your house would eventually fall apart from nails coming out.Most likely nails. Both of my adult children raise goats I know what your going through with this dangerous weather I hear about there concerns often some kind of heat is a wise choice hang in there0 degrees in the goat barn. I need to inject some heat in there for them. I think I am going to blast in my kerosene heater for like 3 minutes. Should get it up to 50 degrees pretty quick.
