1. Western Kentucky OC Ben Arbuckle. They averaged nearly 36 points per game

2. Tulane OC Jim Svoboda. Averaged 33 points per game. This would be my preference as he is from Denison Iowa. He would have to be interested in coming home and stepping up a level.

3. App State OC Kevin Barbay - I put him here b/c they score points and always seem to have explosive offenses.

But what do you guys think? I love the idea of scooping up an over achiever in a non power 5, that is a sweet spot in my opinion. I am honestly agnostic to their style: running spread, passing spread, option, whatever. I simply want someone with more creativity, who has a tendency to do more with less.

Feels like the writing is on the wall naming NS “interim” OC

If it works out that way, fine, but CMC is going to see what's out there or there was no point in putting the interim tag on NS in the first place.

Eh. Campbell will keep things in-house as usual. Nothing too outside the box. Little disappointed Meyers hasn’t been let go yet. Offensive line needs the most work, in my opinion.
Meyers contract is probably up, and will be noted his contract was not renewed when they announce the new assistants.

Arbuckle has pretty limited experience. It looks like he has only been OC at WKU one year. Is WKU's offense a product of Arbuckle or their HC Helton? Look at Helton's resume.

Barbay has a nice background with collegiate coaching experience in Texas, Florida & Michigan. Sounds like good run/pass balance approach. Would be a nice option.

Why name one at all then?

What does an “interim” OC do in the off season exactly?

The answer for a discombobulated offense that struggles with penalties, getting plays in on time, and red zone efficiency probably isn't hiring a position coach from that unit to figure it out on the fly as the new OC.

Regardless of what you think about NS abilities as a coach or his future at ISU.

But it may come down to that after some time. We will see.

I'm guessing Campbell is still looking for a power football background and doesn't really care about PPG.

K-State is what Campbell wants to be offensively.

Here's a useful tool for looking at programs' trends both offensively and defensively. It includes all FBS so you can see who has had offenses that have been showing improvement recently. Scroll down the see the trends, or click on a specific team to see their data.

If we limit it to just G5 teams who are not joining the Big 12, candidates could come from:
  • Memphis
  • SMU
  • Tulane
  • UTSA
  • Ball State
  • Buffalo
  • Coastal Carolina
  • Louisiana

I love power football. I just don't understand building a team that can only win one way. The margin for error keeps shrinking.

Stays on the staff, as your most coveted assistant.
If he’s the most coveted assistant then name his associate head coach.

I’m just sayin- don’t be surprised when he becomes our OC. Maybe it’s co-OC but he’s going to have a much bigger role. FWIW - I’m okay with it. Just don’t get the Interim thing.

Any scheme can be effective with the right players and execution. K-State does virtually nothing flashy but they're normally ahead of the sticks and they pretty much never beat themselves. You can win a lot with those two things.

Did you watch the Pac-12 championship last night? I'd characterize Utah as "power football" - they are just super physical everywhere and pound people into submission. "Power football" doesn't have to mean your playbook only has traps, ISOs, dive and power.
