I have to vote for Jessica Chastain - even though her film career hasn't been exceptionally long (yet), she has undertaken a wide variety of roles and absolutely aced almost every one. I think of the contrast between her ditzy blonde in "The Help" and her steely resolve in "Zero Dark Thirty". One is never less than convinced of her roles, or her authenticity.

I have to agree with this. I actually thought she won for Zero Dark Thirty. Guess not.

In some cases, year of release has an impact, based on the competition. For simplicity, I’m ignoring that aspect.

Leading role
Tom Cruise (Ron Kovic) “Born on the Fourth of July.”
Bill Murray (Phil Connors) “Groundhog Day.” (comedies are an afterthought for Oscars)
Guy Pierce (Leonard Shelby) “Memento.”
Robert Downey Jr., “Chaplin.”
Woody Harrelson, “The People vs. Larry Flynt.”
Jeff Goldblum (Seth Brundle) “The Fly.”

Supporting role
R. Lee Ermey (Gunnery Sgt. Hartman) “Full Metal Jacket.”
Ed Harris (Christof) “The Truman Show.”
John Turturro (Herb Stempel), “Quiz Show”
Isabella Rosselini (Dorothy Vallens) “Blue Velvet.”
Leonardo DiCaprio (Arnie Grape) “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.”
Donald Sutherland (Calvin Jarrett) “Ordinary People.”
Steve Buscemi (Carl Showalter) “Fargo”
