Nirvana - One of the best bands of ALL TIME.

Nothing could compare to the thrill of watching Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St. Vincent and Lorde take turns fronting Nirvana. Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic hadn't played a Kurt Cobain-penned song together in public since the frontman killed himself 20 years ago, and it's quite easy to imagine they never will again. Jett kicked things off with a wild, thrashed-out "Smells Like Teen Spirit" that had men in tuxedos dancing on their chairs. Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon kept the energy high with a faithful rendition of "Aneurysm" and Annie Clark (St. Vincent) belted out "Lithium." It wrapped up with Lorde's gut-wrenching take on "All Apologies." She was born two and a half years after Cobain died, but she somehow had the wisdom and confidence to deliver those agonizing lyrics.

My one music wish was to see Nirvana in concert. Never got to. Luckily they did a couple live albums.

They were groundbreaking.

They were the pioneers of the grunge era. They made unprecedented music and to this day I will listen to the albums beginning to end.

My roommate and I saw them in Davenport at Palmer after In Utero came out. They searched every person going into the auditorium and we still came out high as a kite from all the secondhand ganja smoke.

Was a junior in high school for that show. My uncle agreed to take me and a friend but it fell on our homecoming and we couldn't go. Thought we'd just see them next time...

Nirvana was/is/always will be the most influential band in my life. I no longer wear thrift store sweaters and ripped jeans but the punk rock spirit and attitude is still with me every bit as much today as when I was 16. Everything from my thoughts on politics, race, gender...all influenced by Nirvana in a great way.

Mudhoney and The Melvins might take exception to that pioneer statement.

Nirvana was a great band with a huge impact though. I was completely and utterly obsessed with them in 6th/7th grade.

Very true. I was too young to remember them. May have to check them out.

Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam) were members of Mudhoney. Pretty good stuff. The Melvins aare almost heavy metal, but you can hear some definite elements of grunge.

Stone and Jeff were not in Mudhoney. They were in a band called Green River. When that band broke up it split off into Mudhoney/Pearl Jam.

Not quite. Some of the members created Mother Love Bone first. When their lead singer died of a heroin overdose, they created Pearl Jam.

I suppose technically you could say Temple of the Dog came before Pearl Jam as well.

I was totally mixing Mudhoney with Mother Love Bone, but both were Seattle grunge bands that predated the success of grunge.

Holy hell, I'm going senile.

As long as we're being technical, they created Mookie Blaylock first, then Pearl Jam.

On the grunge note, if you're ever in Seattle, do yourself a favor and go see the Experience Music Project. The "Seattle Sound" exhibit is friggin awesome as is their Hendrix exhibit. Well worth the $15 door charge. Your admission also comes with free entry to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame museum, which is next door. It is also awesome but for different reasons.

I'm a big fan of Mother Love Bone. If you want to hear the band that bridged the gap between "hair metal" and grunge, then check out our their self-titled album.

Usually the RnR HOF show on HBO is great every year. Can't wait to see this. I didn't get into Nirvana until years after Cobain died, but I was too much of a hippie wannabe in the early 90s and didn't really relate to the brooding anger until much later in life.
