OK, I went to work today and told this exact same story to some people at work. I also told the exact same story to some friends away from work. They all reacted much differently than you guys did.

And they all agreed to a man, about 15 people is what I'm talking about, that it is completely ridiculous for someone to expect you to buy something that costs $300 sight unseen and that no matter how similar they are, a 3G and a 3G S are not the same thing.

Maybe the difference in reactions is the difference in writing something down and telling it in person, where you can see the story-teller's facial expressions, and hear the inflections in his voice.

Oh, and for the guy who thinks I'm wrong about the prices, you link the monthly cell phone service rates and say I'm wrong about the price of the cell phones? What's that? The price of the phones is $199 and $299 and has nothing to do with the type of service you get with it.

Maybe you're that guy that its quicker to end a conversation with by agreeing than to disagree with what you're saying.....after all your name on here is Bipolarcy

The link is talking about the prices of the cell phones, if you dig into the FAQ, though I realized later that it's talking about the price of the old 3G (which is actually almost identical to the 3GS now, just the size of the storage is different).

iPhone 3G S pricing: Existing customers, beware | Crave - CNET is the article I was attempting to link to.

And the 3G and 3GS are functionally identical. The 3GS has a slightly faster processor, and the ability to record video, and that's really pretty much it. Maybe the guy should have let you handle it. I don't blame him for not doing it, though.

It still doesn't excuse you for being uninformed and mad about it.

It's not like it was his idea to not let you handle the phone, your beef should have been either with a Best Buy manager/corporate or with Apple depending on who's rule that is.

you sound like a huge ******.

you aren't getting the godphone for those prices without signing/renewing a contract. it's not his fault he can't show you the phone. They are basically the same.

I have a friend who just got a new 16-gig iPhone 3G S for $199 on Wednesday and he never had to sign a contract with AT&T. He got the phone and is using his old cell phone service with it. No contract, I tell him on the way out the door.

how is this even possible? can you PM me with those details?

I went from the original iPhone to the iPhone 3G S but what I've noticed is that the speaker is way louder and it's a lot quicker going from program to program.

The voice dialing feature is one I use quite often, not for calling but for the ipod feature.

The price of the phone HAS EVERYTHING to do with the service you are getting. Since AT&T pays Apple about $600 per iPhone 3G S sold, they take the initial hit and make it up with the monthly service.

What's with all the personal attacks? One time on this site, I posted something tongue-in-cheek about a featherbutt, nonetheless, and it got deleted and I get a slap on the wirst from a mod.

But people are free to call me any name under the sun just because they don't agree with my methods in dealing with a store clerk who wasn't being very helpful.

Yes, I may have gone overboard, but he still wasn't very helpful or knowledgeable about his own product. You'd think I shot someone's puppy the way people here are responding to it.

As a former Best Buy employee for 5 years (although many years ago)...

1. In this day in age where you can find information everywhere, you cannot expect every salesperson in a retail store to know everything about a product. It is likely that this person covers 50 different phones that are changing daily and 7 different service providers that have different contract rules. Where you've probably done a ton of research on ONE product.

2. As soon as you challenged him, you sealed your fate for your future questions. In the retail environment where he has his job on the line... he's going to say very little and just hope that you leave the store sooner than later. It's not worth it to him to challenge you as he's paid hourly and not on commission.

3. If he opens the box, Best Buy cannot sell that phone per AT&T rules. This is not his fault, it's more on AT&T or store management to make sure they have a demo unit on display.

This. At work, a lot of times it's easier to nod and agree than to tell the person they are dead wrong and waste 30 minutes going back and forth. A lot of times, it's just not worth the hassle.

He was probably thinking that if he disagreed you would have thrown your hands in the air and 'let him have it'. Then told him 'how it is'.
