I find it hard to believe the claim that NDSU is "considered to be one of the best teams in FCS", when they have only been in the FCS for a couple short years, and only one of those being in a legit conference. In their short time in FCS, they have zero playoff appearances. A school with ZERO FCS playoff appearances is "considered one of the best"?....

I'm sensing a bit of Jimlad needed here? Bold and arrogant statements coming from a team with such RICH TRADITION. Cant wait to watch the bison (notice not in caps?) get herded up and shooed out of Ames.

Hey Fella, we have our big games too! Our history is with the smaller colleges and I think thats the point you are making. Well Taken. I think a comparison can be made that reflects well for NDSU and this game.

ISU is a grand tradition at the highest levels of college football. Its proud but it shows a losing effort.

The BISON have met the competition, the best there was, and the record stands as it is.

NDSU was competing against smaller colleges, on average, but having a lot more success. They played the best there was and they have an overwhelming winning record. Thats the overlap Im talking about. Thats what makes this game interesting.

Thats what makes this game interesting.

I'd say the fact that it's played on a Thursday night is pretty interesting. That means, I can go to this game, and then possibly the UNI Iowa game on Saturday. Two college football games in one week! That is interesting. North Dakota State....not interesting.

You guys have a great tradition, and a claim to confidence, maybe even over-confidence. you are the 2-10 ISU Cyclones out of the Big 12.

This was posted on www.bisonsports.net not too long ago:

The first thing I noticed when looking at the Iowa State roster was how thin they are along the offensive line, at running back and wide receiver. I think the QB situation is a lot like ours too except their starter, Austen Arnaud, has demonstrated he can play. After Arnaud they dont have any experience.

Alexander Robinson is the only proven running back. The other 2 are a soph and fresh. The freshman, Jeremiah Schwarts was red shirted last year.

Their O line is big, with most players over 300 and tall. It will be a challenge for our defensive line but we may be able to get to the QB, especially against their seconds, which would be a big help in stopping what is sure to be a passing fest.

The Cyclones are a passing team first. This plays in NDSUs favor because our linebackers are mostly unknowns. This is a much better situation than facing a proven and reliable backfield that is the backbone of the offense. Instead they will be bringing their passing game up against our experienced secondary.

Their inexperience at WR might also be a plus for The BISON. Our corners are experienced and good. This is an even matchup and could go either way. Great test for the BISON. This could be one of the best passing teams we will see all year.

Their defensive line lacks experience both in starting positions and depth. The advantage here is to The BISON. We have a proven offensive line that will not be intimidated by the Big 12 Cyclones. They look good at defensive back and Mertens has to be careful. There D backs will be all over the ball. You might remember SDSU had 5 ints last year. If we do that a lot of BISON fans will wish they stayed home.

I think we match up well with the Cyclones. Statistically we look competitive but you have to remember the strength of schedule issues. Their stats are higher quality.

NDSU has to limit ISUs success passing. We can do that with a good pass rush and good coverage. Both look like probable outcomes.

Stopping their running game is a question mark, so NDSU will have to respond with a strong performance from our linebackers.

On the offensive side of the ball we have a good chance of getting our own running game going. I think our O line has a clear advantage over their defensive line which is lacking in depth and experience. Their linebacking corps is also inexperienced. We are going to need more than between the tackles but with some innovative play calling and a steady game we may be able to control the ball on the ground and keep the chains moving. Thats the key to victory. That and no mistakes.

It sounds bad for ISU.

Minnesota went 7-5 following their 1-11 season where they lost to NDSU. Does this mean that ISU will go 8-4 following a 2-10 season. +6 wins??

What I don't get is the need to convince us that this will be a great game. That is why you will travel hours and hours to get here to cheer for your team. That's awesome! I've done the same for the Cyclones in all the up AND down years. Do you need us to say, "You're right, this may be a close game if our guys **** up and your team is playing a perfect game."

OK, here you go, this game will be a barn burner, we will be sweating it out until the very end IF our team sucks and yours is awesome!

Happy?

I really look forward to the days when we stop playing these games. Seems like yesterday when we were sitting in KC at Arrowhead playing Florida St to the final buzzer instead of this crap.

That would be our biggest disappointment, but you cant have a perfect world. ISU fans must know this more than anyone else, but You have had better success against UI than we have against UND. Thats a plus in your favor. It shows an edge in the big game, but since most of you dont take this seriously its really not a factor.

I can see you are determined to win.

I know this: The NDSU BISON are determined to win. The BISON are not confusing ISU with any team. NDSU is preparing for the Cyclones. Everyone here hopes you are still preparing for SDSU.

UNI must have been 2 yrs ago? They are in our league you know?

I guess I'd like to see where ISU is lacking at experience at WR. They only return 4 of their top 5 guys plus get a talented (4 star) JUCO. Same with the DL. ISU brings back two starters and multiple reserves who saw time in the rotation last year. Will this DL dominate the Big XII, no. But will it more than hold its own against a 1aa OL, you bet.

And the talk about no experienced depth at QB and RB? Well, it's the first game. Chances are, ISU won't NEED experienced depth there. In fact, our depth will be getting experience in the third quarter when the starters are done. I hope that NDSU thinks that ISU is going to pass it all over, because I expect them to run it quite a bit and not show too much to iowa.

This doesn't sound like the team I follow. For instance, we're thin along the offensive line and at RB? The redshirt freshman RB you so casually tossed in the heap was the scout team offensive player of the year last year. Plus we have a Florida transfer just becoming eligible. The freshman especially looks like a monster in practice and the transfer has speed to burn. That's not even counting two true freshmen, who also look capable. One of them reminds Big XII followers of Darren Sproles, same size, same blazing speed. ISU fans are excited about our depth at RB and we have some wannabe pundit telling us we should be concerned? We're thin there?

We have 8 guys on the offensive line who have started at least one game and several others who have played significant minutes. We're thin there?

We're inexperienced at WR? We may be youngish, but we are NOT inexperienced. We return three starters/part-time starters, and a guy who should have started if the previous coaching staff didn't have it's head up its collective behind. We return 6 players, including TEs, who had at least 15 catches last year. Make that 7 players if you count RBs. Even saying that, there are several newcomers and holdovers having a very good camp and pushing the proven veterans for playing time. And they'll probably get it because this staff wants to trot players in and out on the fly. You are going to be in for the shock of your lives if you think WR is one of the weaknesses of this team. It's the deepest, most talented position on the team.

We lack experience and depth on the D-line? We have three seniors and a junior on the d-line, all four of whom have started at one time or another or have seen extensive playing time in crunch time, plus three backups at interior positions who have played when the bullets were flying. You have me on the DEs, because we're counting on two redshirt freshmen to be backups. But one of them, Maggitt, was defensive player of the year on the scout team last year, and the other one, Laing, may have the most talent, though he's raw. We're thin there? If anything we're lacking talent that most Big XII teams have, but a lot of 1-A schools could say the same thing.

We're weak and thin at LB, but we are hopefully correcting that with a couple of jucos and a couple of really talented freshman that the coaches have already singled out. Besides, we are going to be playing mostly a 5 DB set for many of our games, with the exception of the first two, based on the offense that's across from us.

The only thing you got right is the defensive backfield. We have a lot of returning players, plus one player we're all really excited about, David Sims, who should be playing at Oklahoma if he had gotten a test score back earlier.

So, no, that analysis you provided looks nothing like the team I follow.

I grew up in western Minnesota, about three hours from Fargo. My brother went to NDSU, my girlfriend ( now wife) went to NDSU & I almost went there (even had my dorm room picked out!)

I still have some NDSU clothing and have always liked them.....loved it when they beat Minny a couple years back! I have gone to many of their football & bball games & I have always cheered for them.

Until Now. These idiots on here make me think they're direct decendants of Hawk fans! What a bunch of pompous morons.

Tradition? Are you kidding me? Iowa State has never had a good football program, but our basketball arena seats almost as many as the fargo dome! We can never brag about being famous for upsetting Cal_Poly, all we have is beating a few top-ten teams (that's in div 1A)...one of those teams went undefeated otherwise, won a big 10 championship & went to the Rose Bowl! You're right though......how could we ever compete with a team, who against all odds, knocked off the unstppable powerhouse known as Montana.

ISU should probably forfeit now & just prevent certain embarrassment! How dare we?!

I think the crowd will have a big part in this game. New coach, new direction, and the return of football season will bring out a good sample of the Cyclone Faithful. Let's say 45,000 Clones to be safe. the Fargodome holds 19,000. This will be a completely different atmosphere and not a friendly one for the Bison in my opinion. JTS isn't the best in the midwest but you'd be a damn fool to say that we can't make it rock from time to time. It's got to be hard to simulate that in practice....

I agree that NDSU is not an FCS powerhouse as they have only been in the FCS a few short years and have yet to make the playoffs. UNI is not in your conference your are in UNI's conference. UNI has a proven track record within the conference that you have yet to earn in your 1 season. With that being said, I do think that NDSU can win and will win this game because Iowa State will overlook NDSU for Iowa.
