I used to work at O'Malley's and personally I don't see why people like it so much. I mean sure the first Monday of every month I could why people would want to go there to get cheap fajitas. As far as talent goes though the cooks there weren't all that impressive they were just ISU students. When I worked there I can only remember two chefs there. One was my boss the other was ok at best.

Personally I am biased against O'Malley's because of how the management treated me there but there was no great talent there as some of you claim. Just a bunch of ISU students that worked their butt off to pull off good decent meals. I my opinion if you want to eat mexican then there is no other place in Ames than La Fuente.

False.

I think the the chicken fajitas at Legends are the best in town. Cazador and La Fuente are both good too. Taco Time is the best if you're in a hurry.

Somebody here had a bad expereince at La Fuente...

I started there over 2 years ago and not a single one of the cooks was an ISU student. 3 of them were actually culinary students in Des Moines. Granted...I guess the other guy could have worked there a long time ago and the situation might have been different.

Thank you for the best laugh I have had all day. I don't know if you are being intentionally funny or not, but I'm going to pretend you're not. No offense.

The "talent" they are talking about refers to the gauged attractiveness of the wait staff. O'malley's is known for having pretty decent "talent" on average, whereas La Fuente is more like the Detriot Lions of Mexican food.

I haven't been back to La Fuente since they accidentally gave my plate to someone at the next table, who took a bite out of it, said it wasn't theirs, so they picked it up and gave it to me. Never again.

My thoughts exactly. I don't understand how the city is responsible for this.

It's the whole "smart growth" tree hugger movement advanced by the city mangager and council. They are trying to keep the commercial districts as compact as possible as a means to prevent urban sprawl. It just so happens that their idiotic policy encourages development along South Duff which since the beginning of time has been located in a flood plain.

If you've ever tried to develop property in Ames or at least read the city code in reference to zoning you would understand.

Exactly how did the City force people to locate on Duff?

The point is that if people don't want to build where the city prefers them to then they don't have to build period.

The point is that the desires of those in charge do not coincide with the majority of residents and out of town patrons who would frequent those businesses. And since it doesn't really affect the majority as it does those trying to build businesses, the majority isn't ticked off enough to do anything about it.

Well that may have been the case 2 years ago but when I worked there in the summer of 2003 that just wasn't the case. Kudos for them to hire great help, not to say that students that I worked with were bad though.

okay, so i heard o'mallys is shut down for good. is this true and if so, wtf?? i love that place-everytime i go back to ames i try and get there.

Honestly, I know a lot of people think it is the greatest and it may well be the best mexican in town but I think it is VERY average and won't miss it. If it is closing though I feel for all of you who enjoy it, I hate it when my favorite restaurants close. My theory is, if it was that good to that many people it wouldn't close.

Somehow I feel that those posts referring to "talent" weren't in reference to the cooks...

My bad then who are they referring to?

You mean we actually have to spell this out for you? Well, here's a couple of books I found on Amazon that might help you out...

Yes, Ames does allow fill in the floodplain. As does most every city in the country because FEMA and the ACOE have said that you can allow it. While it is possible that Ames could stop doing that, they would be opposing what the supposed experts who map monitor and pay flood claims say. It would be tough at best to pull it off.
