A) He is the greatest marketer we have had at AD.

B) He is the greatest speech-maker we have had at AD.

C) He has a great ability to sell the illusion of winning in the future.

D) He was too anxious to get rid of existing coaches and bring in his own guys.

E) He's not that good at picking coaches.

Ironically it was the fans that made JP get rid of Mac. Morgan had to go; not because of what his teams did on the court.

Pretty much agree with you. I think it could be argued that DMac had peaked and the program was heading down, with enthusiasm dying. No arguing that his overall conference winning percentage in the 28% range wasn't cutting it. Morgan should have been given a 4th year as imo the whole team would have returned had it not been clear that JP was trying to get rid of him. JP has no background in football or basketball, so needs a lot of help in evaluating coaches. I was shocked when I heard he had offered Chiz two more years a few weeks ago. But I don't doubt his sincerity in loving ISU, and I think he may have got it right with the Rhodes hire (time will tell).

My view of Pollard:

Iowa State has the fewest resources and assets of any Big 12 member. To expect the ISU AD to build a department in three years is fallacious thinking -- Jesus Christ he ain't.

Geez, I'm just happy a man of JP's character and abilities was willing to assume a job that will be grindingly difficult and require the patience of Job.

Pollard is doing a fine job. His job is NOWHERE near being in question. Not unless GMac goes winless for the rest of the season and Paul Rhoads goes winless and the NCAA nails him for recruiting violations and his team gets arrested.

Unfortunately character does not hire coaches, put W's up for the good guys or bring solid athletes to ISU.

I disagree. Without character, we wind up with NCAA penalties and set back a program or two for many more years.

The GMac and Rhoads and Sanderson hirings, the Fennelly contract extension, the great job CJ is doing in VB, to my thinking all these are fine character people.

JP's fine character -- and, thus, his hiring preferences -- is key to building an ISU athletics department of which we can be proud . . . in my humble opinion.

If JP was shady, I know I would have been outta here long ago. Bet I wouldn't have been the only one.

I'm not willing to win at any cost. Others here are willing to pay any price, no doubt. I say no deals with the devil.

And the rest of all the fru fru...

just remember it is hellishly easy as fan to sit back and rant about things and act like you really know what is going on, or that you really understand coaching because you dont have to be out there doing it. Yes, I am frustrated with last night's loss, and yes I am somewhat disappointed with the season so far, but lets get things into some perspective. The NCAA screwed Lucca and in doing so screwed ISU. Wes left, which was his wont to do, but it was a gut punch to the program. And yes, we have a way to go for improvement. But, from sounds of things, we are getting better recruits. We will see. But it is damned easy to call for peoples heads when you are sitting behind a keyboard.

Good recent example is Indiana basketball. Ranked as high as #6 last year, and then the Sampson stuff began to hit. They have been set back 3 years at least, as well as being out significant $$ to fix the mess. That is not something I want at ISU.

Mac had to start with scholarship penalties because of Wayne... Only this year has he really gotten that mess fixed.

I get tired of all the trumpeting about character and integrity. That's what we got from Chiz and we all see how that worked out. There are plenty of a.d's and coaches that have good character AND are good at their jobs. I would hope that's what we want in our a.d and coaches. JP's most important job is to hire and retain good coaches, especially football and men's basketball, the moneymakers. So far his skills in that area are very much in question, not his character.

Ames- Explain to me what scholarship penalties GMac inherited from Wayne. How many and for what years? That one must have escaped me.

The big difference is Chiz talked about his own character and integrity. Other people talk about Macs.

We were down scholarships because of academics. That was going to happen even if Wayne had stayed. Then add to that players leaving ineligible because they knew they would have to sit the next year during a transfer and Mac inherited some real problems. He inherited other problems also. That's why JP will give Mac another year for sure.

I thought the only academic casualty under Wayne was Faulkner. In fact I'm pretty sure the team gpa went up under Wayne from the LE years. And what players left because they were ineligible? A lot of players left because they were upset WM got canned, or didn't want to play G-Mac's style, but this ineligibility problem is news to me?
