Was in Ames for a basketball tournament for my oldest during Naz's senior year. Iowa State played that night and I remember watching it on a TV in the All Iowa Attack facility during half time of my son's game. Don't remember the exact game but it was one of Naz's better games.

Later that night I stopped at Kum and Go and Naz is checking out in front of us. My youngest (probably 9 at the time) had Naz as a coach at the father son basketball camp earlier that year and spent more time with him at the camp then me and idolized him ever since. I asked Naz if he remembered a kid from camp that he used to do a special handshake with. He said yes. I said he's outside in the van, would you mind saying hi? He said sure.

He ended up sitting in the back of my van with my son for a good 10 minutes playing Angry Birds on my sons tablet.

This is bringing back memories. A couple other random encounters:
Was driving by MWL and Cato is jamming with headphones and walks out right in front my car. I swerve and barely miss him. Look back in my mirror and keeps on walking like nothing happened.
Played flag football in the Iowa games in maybe 2002 and beat a team of what appeared to be bartenders that for some reason had Seneca and Atif Austin on their team.

I saw Tavon Sledge at a few (probably 3) parties in the Legacy Tower, before they turned it into dorms. And every time I saw Tavon he had a full 1.75 bottle of Grey Goose and was always holding it. I befriended him at the first party by talking about how I played his AAU team (Rich Soil, even though we played their B team lol) and the next couple parties I saw him at he would point at me and without saying anything pour the Goose down my throat. I hated Vodka but didn't dare tell him that

I was at a CF Recruitment Day party at the Keg Stand having a nice talk with Shane Burnham when a guy comes up and says "Joel Lanning wants to call you." So, Shane answers the phone and is recruiting Joel Lanning right there in front of me. And the rest is Cyclone history.

I spent a good 30 or 45 minutes talking to Shane in the DSM airport security line in 2012. He was a really nice guy; I could see why guys would want to play for him.

Can't believe I forgot this one -

I met Coach Prohm at the Tailgate Tour last year (2016) at a home, and he told my friend and I the story of when Monte told him he would be returning for his senior year. It was in FEBRUARY (been said that he waited until after the season to decide) and Monte called him at 1-2 in the morning, and he missed it. Prohm said when he saw that it was Monte who called, he had a bit of a panic attack because "nothing good ever comes from a call after 1AM". But, to his surprise it was as good of news as you could ask for. Monte just said "Coach, I think I am going to play my senior season" and the rest is history.

I was having a beer at the Copper Dollar and some guy come up and orders a beer beside me. Puts his hand down on the bar and it is this massive paw. I look over and it was Gary Thompkins. He is just a bit taller than me but his hand was like double mine.

I was in line at the DOT and Sam Hill got in line behind me. We talked about an article he had written in the Daily a couple of weeks earlier while waiting.

I was in line at Hardees at the North Grand Mall standing besides Jeff Grayer. He wasn't 6'5"

I saw Coach Danny Mac getting his shoes shined at the Denver airport.

I saw Coach McDermott here in Omaha shortly after he came to coach Creighton. He was at DJ's Dugout when they still did Blazin Pianos.

Most won't remember Jeff Yrchak, long snapper on Earl's great 70's teams. He lived on my floor. One night I saw him in the W-W Commons eating a beer glass. Blood steaming down his face, I said, "Yurch, why?". He just laughed.

The most notable part of this story is that it took 30+ minutes to get through security at DSM. Close second is that someone who presumably flew as frequently as Shane didn't have TSA Precheck.

This was Dec 2012. I don't think TSA Precheck was a thing yet. Or not in DSM, at least.
