I’m going to distinguish between “most improved” and “breakout” players.

On offense, I’m going to go with Brock as most improved. Last year I predicted he’d hit 4,000 yards (and I missed—by 18), but I think he improves his numbers across the board. 27 TD passes was rather paltry for the yardage he put up, so I think he makes a big jump there. And he won’t be fighting a bad ankle half the season.

Defensively, I’ve gotta go with Mike Rose. I’ve read that he’s going to slide back to Mike (with Vance going to Will). If that’s true, it could make a huge difference in Mike’s performance—and in the defense overall.

Breakout players? I’m tempted to go with Darien Porter, but I think he just gets his feet wet this season. So I’ll go with Joe Scates. Too much talent to stay quiet his whole career. Scary talent! His open field running is like a 6’2” Tarique.

My runner up would be Grant Treiber—at left tackle.

On defense, I’ll go with safety/nickel Isheem Young. Now, I realize that Arnold Azunna may well start, but I think that Young is really going to open some eyes.

Of course, the “breakout” player on defense will probably turn out to be whoever grabs the open linebacker spot, but I don’t have a clue who that will be right now.

Didn't realize Brock tweeked an ankle, he didn't look very mobile 2nd half of the season. What game did he hurt it?

I didn't see him play a whole lot outside of passing downs when he could just pin his ears back and pass rush. If that's his role again this year, I'm happy. He was great at it and something we haven't had in awhile.

We have several other "every down" type DEs that can work into the rotation. Great position to have depth and options.
Honestly, whats the big deal if he ends up only being a passing down type of DE? Epenesa was that type of player his sophomore year and then almost regressed last year having to play the majority of downs. If McDonald has a roll like Epenesa and has the success he had then so be it and go be a first rounder for it
