I'm affraid "discomb" has Ames, Iowa confused with a major city or mecca of cultural diversity that easily attracts major talent and coaches. It's not like players are knocking down the door to get into ISU. Iowa State should have resonable expectation. LE's two bad years were hard. That may be the best point that discomb has made. Realistic expectation, in my opinion, for ISU are to be in the top half of the conference year in and year out with a outside shot at winning the conference every 3 or 4 years. We were spoiled with two back to back championships. We're not playing in the WCC. Discomb must not have been going to games when David Moss or Ron Harris were suiting up. ISU Basketball has come a long way and the expectations are higher then when one of Johnny's teams made an NIT, but we are not Duke, Kentucky or UCLA.

Are you suggesting we settle for mediocrity? I hope not. Some people think that I am very negative, but in fact I am just the opposite. I believe that ISU never has to settle for anything in men's basketball. Say what you want about WM he had top ranked talent knocking down the door to get into ISU. Not so much who he got to ISU, but who he was talking to for the next couple of years. WM is gone, but getting elite level recruits to ISU can be done, and I believe that should be the goal of whoever th coach is at ISU.

I'm suggesting realistic. We are not going to win the Big 12 every year. Yes we can compete for the title, but usually the top 6 teams are in the hunt. That is why I think that being in the top half every year is important. As for the talent that WM had beating the door down. Blalock and Clark were the only 4 star recruits. Taggart had four start by his name, but in my opinion a 3 would have been more appropriate. Not dissing on him, 3 stars is still pretty good, but I didn't see that much difference between Marsden and him. It would be great to get 3 or 4 four star recruit a year, but do I think that's possible...no. We need to constantly get our 1 or maybe 2 four stars and a bunch of 3 star and coach the hell out of them. That is realistic.

I guess I just have loftier goals for our program than you do. There is no reason why we can't get to where Kansas is. Was WM the right guy to get us there? Probably not, but at least he was getting the players. I know a lot of people bash some of the guys he brought in, but they were highly ranked, recruited by other major schools and now that they are leaving, are going to schools with good programs (mike evanovich aside). He was also in on some truly huge recruits for the coming years. If McDermott is indeed recruiting nationally and going after top prospects, then I will be happy if not, and he is settling for what he thinks we can get, I will be disappointed. I wan't us to get the kind of athletes that will have us in the top 2 or 3 in the league, not just the top half. There is no reason to accept mediocrity in ISU basketball.

I definately agree with you melkor. I want to have kids wanting to go here other than KU or Texas. I do however think we need to start slow and get one or two big name recruits that are going to work well with our players. I think if we start small it will open the doors to others. We were pretty much there with WM, but the apparent lack of discipline hurt us. When I looked out there I did not see a team, I saw 5 individuals and that has not been ISU basketball. I think we can get to the point of bringing Greg Paulus's and Josh McRoberts's (Duke freshman last year) and have them come in as freshamn and be role players first before they are stars so they can be good leaders. Something this team had in WB and CS, but didn't have any followers unfortunately.

I think with the assistant coaches that we have on staff, we will see the higher caliber recruits giving us serious interest and not just dismissing us. I am excited to see who Gmac is recruiting for next years class!!

One thing that i do not understand about the men's Basketball Roster is that it appears that we have 13 scholarship players plus Alex Thompson sitting out. Is that right? I thought Big 12 was limited to only 12 scholarships at one time. Is there one red shorted freshman coming in among the 3 freshman? If so, do we really have "3 seniors leaving scholies" to offer for next year or Alex, plus the redshirt, plus one.

What roster are you looking at? We are allowed 13 (not 12) scholarship players but don't have that many. We'll probably have 9 scholarship players next year.

Please note that as things currently stand, GMac will have 4 scholarships available for this fall, and 4 juniors on the current team. If everything stays in place,he will have 4 more recruits a year from now, a great oportunity to get his players into the program.

I'm not going to list all of them, but how about Darius Gabriel, who is considered to be one of the top 5 or so players in the 2008 class. Now shut up and don't post about things you know nothing about. Or maybe, I should just say "Get real."

Can you give a link that says that hes top 5 in the country for 08??? I'm not arguing with you, if true thats pretty cool!! Anyways... Rivals has been updated a few times since the coaching change and he has us high with all the other teams as medium! so obviously theres still a chance!

I wouldn't say any recruits where 'knocking down the door', but yes WM was in on some real talent. But, getting that talent to win games wasn't WM's strength.

Coach's make players want to come. Now we all know Ames isn't in the middle of a booming downtown or even remotely exciting nightlife however having a coach sell a player and his parents on his philosophies, playing style, work ethic and possible pro development will get their attention and have them choose to sign anywhere (even Ames). That was one of the reasons we got Fizer. He had a developed a relationship with Floyd. Timmy also sold him on the possibility of playing against the best talent out there. I remember in an interview with Fizer he said Floyd told him he knew he could play with the best but could he beat the best. If you come to ISU you have the chance to show how good you are by playing and beating the TX's and Kansas' out there. I don't see why that still can't be a selling tool. Ingenious. More reason to love what Floyd did while he was at ISU.

Nice try, the reason you can't list them all is because they don't exist. I follow ISU MBB recruiting and while Gabriel did show interest, that doesn't mean they were "knocking down Wayne's door". I know you are a Wayne apologist, but please don't exaggerate his recruiting efforts. After LE left, his recruiting wasn't all that great.

Wayne signed a lot of great players. The problem was getting them on campus. (Ivan Chiriav)

Now Ivan was a player who really should have tried college life. He had a little bad info on his ability to impress the NBA.
