More possible recruits for 07

He is negative, but he isn't talking about booing the win or booing the team. He is talking about booing the coach and the style of basketball we played. Just like I heard people booing Curtis and various other players during our win over Colorado at Hilton last year. A game in which he had a triple double by the end of the game. Those are the really bad fans. Discombobulated doesn't like the direction he sees our program going, but that doesn't mean he is stupid.

I never dissappear. Morgan had a great class coming in and was huge in some major recruits for next year. The bigs given time to develop in the season had a lot of promise and much like homan could have looked better after a year of tootalidge in the zone. he came up with 2 20 win seasons and a 16-14 season, lets get it right. Its not like that was the only year he coached. He won't find a job for next year because he was fired. Every fired coach takes at least a year off, collects thier money and returns with the memory of them being fired erased. He won more than mcd ever has, and unfortunately ever will. He won a conf. title, and an ncaa game. He had a higher ranked defense last year and still put up 80 pts a game. Certain people just didn't like him. was it because of where he was from or his demenor on the bench, were people just reaching for an excuse I do not know. Stinson was booed last year too, yet neal was given a huge ovation anytime his name was called. Maybe that is why you are so happy to see him go.

Boy, you must have hated Floyd's teams, hell Larry's teams were never high scoring teams either, you're tough to please. In 2000, we beat Oklahoma 70-58 to win the Big 12 Conference Tournament, was that score JUST even to please you?? What about the amazing Wayne Morgan's throttling win over Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA two years ago...what was the score of that one?..64-53? Ssssss, Yep. Dam, I was pissed too. I was screeming mad that we advanced to the second round to face North Carolina by only scoring 64 points...just pathetic, right?

Discombob...Thats Ridiculous! you're telling me that you would be happy with a 16-14 WM team that scored something like 79 pts. per game but you would boo,for instance, a GMac team that scores 69 pts a game regaardless of how many games they win? Thats crazy! i dont care if we core 40 points a game, if we win i dont care! And you shouldnt either, if in fact, you are a cyclone fan.

I love how people are willing to question a person's loyalty to ISU when that person's opinions don't match up with theirs. Whether you agree with him or not, he obviously cares a hell of a lot about what is going on in ISU bball program. I haven't seen him bash ISU or any players, just GMac. A position that he is not alone on. I think it is funny that he posts his position and then people attack him. If his positions are as ludicrous as everyone seems to think, then why not beat him with logic or sound reasoning or something? I don't like GMac and a lot of the stuff he has done either, does that mean I am a hawk fan? No. I don't like GMac and a lot of the stuff he has done either, does that mean I don't support the team? No. Can I dislike the playing style of an ISU team but still support them? Absolutely. Will I support the team every time GMac leads them onto the floor? No doubt.

Being a good cyclone fan has nothing to do with blindly supporting the new coach. It has everything to do with wanting the best for the program. Many of you are convinced that GMac is the best thing for the program. Some, like discombobulated are not convinced that he is the best thing for the program. Both viewpoints have no good basis. He has not coached a game for ISU yet and none of us have seen his recruits in action against BIG XII talent, so both viewpoints are based solely on opinion at this point. Everyone needs to understand this and realize that while each side MAY be right, neither side can know they are right. So if you disagree with discombobulated and think he is off-base, then debate him, do not debase him. Refute his position (which is shared by others) with good reasoning about why he is wrong without the personal attacks and the simple "you don't know anything" response.

I hope I don't earn the same treatment that Discombobulated gets for making this post. I just hope that GMac is, despite my misgivings, is the best thing for our program, both in the short run and in the long. Have a nice day and go cyclones!

Or terrible shooting, you make the call. Thousands of fans did it last year when they booed curtis everytime he took a shot. Fans booed me when I was the ONLY person giving curtis a standing O for his triple double performance against colorado. those same people cheered when neal dragged his butt off the bench to clank a few threes.
MORGAN HAS WON MORE THAN GMAC. who won a conference title? Morgan. Who has made it to the Nit final four? Morgan. Who has won even a single game in the tourney? MORGAN. Gmac has done none of that, even with his supposedly great players at UNI. mcd will not win 18 games this year at isu (morgans average), he won't even sniff 16 (morgans lowest year) in two years he may not win 5, Thank god for colorado or we may be swept in the big 12 for the next few years.
If we score in the 60's and win, i have not got my money's worth. Johnny scored 100 pts a game, he invented hilton magic. attendance went down with floyd and larry because they took the air out of the ball, and back up with morgan, at least until the end.
 
Ah yes, I remember Lafister Rhodes and his 54 points against our dreaded rivals. What an exciting game.

Ok. I have a couple points to make. Morgan has not won a conference title.

He was not on the staff when we won the regular season conference title Tinsley's SR year. Also, Floyd's first year was also Hoiberg's, Julius', and Loren Meyer's Senior years. It did not make any sense for them to transfer out and sit out a year for them to play one year. All three were close to graduating so it was also a student decision. Plus when you have those three returning, I do not think it would make any sense for other players to leave if your leaders are staying. Who were the leaders of this year's team: Curtis and Will. They both anounced they were leaving while WAYNE WAS STILL THE COACH. Floyd was here for three years before he bolted after the 96-97 season. LE was left with nothing basically, so of course he didn't have turnover. Wayne's turnover consisted of Haluska. He was also responsible for recruiting everyone so more than likely none of his recruits were going to leave.

Discomb....I do not dispute your point. The WM style of basketball was fun, but we were not able to grind out games in the BIG 12 when we didn't have superior talent. The previous two teams were able to because of the inside presence of Homan, Vroman, Staple. Marcus Fizer has been our only big name recruit in a long long time. I agree that it would be nice to sign the J.J. Reddick's and the Sheldon William's, but at the end, I just want to win. If there are 5 guys out there doing whatever they can to win, then I will more than happily take that. I think the biggest thing that hurt WM was the fact he was not able to recruit for the future...IE...having a shawn taggart around to learn under homan as a freshman so we dont have these pains. Also, I think people give WM alot of credit for Jared Homan since he was around to reap the benefits, and I think alot of Jared's success was his work ethic prior to college, LE, and weight room. We also do not know what practice atmosphere is like. If it doesnt appear that progress of players is being made then it is not good. It would not matter if we brought all the talent in the world and did not demand anything out of them. I believe this is why the KU's, UNC's, Duke's are so successful because when they bring the talent in, they demand them to get better. I do not know if that was the case here. Just a speculation.

Discomb...I appreciate your opinions and points of view. I know you take a lot of heat for it and I may have earlier given you some as well, but that was more than likely during finals week and who isn't cranky during that time!! But it is nice to know that all cyclone fans are not "Yes people." I understand the reason for your booing. You are not booing the players...more or less the coach or more probable....JP. I hope that you will cheer ISU on to victory first before you show your displeasure with the hire.

Uh...he was talking about the Conference Title Morgan won when at Long Beach State.
 
Wayne Morgan was also fired at Long Beach State. McDermott took a basketball graveyard of a school to the NCAA tourney 3 out of the last 4 years. The reason he didn't take UNI to the Final Four of the NIT is because he had them in the NCAAs instead. I do not claim that McDermott is going to win the Big 12 next year but it sure will be fun to see guys playing hard and with passion for the game. Watching us lose to Iona and Fresno State in the Hilton last year was pitiful. Pathetic effort and no teamwork killed Hilton Magic. Great effort and playing together is exactly what will get wins over the Ionas of the world and have the fans on their feet once again.
 
yea, as soon as i posted that i seeemingly forget the success WM had at LBSU. he had many good players for their conference and one NBA player. not too bad coming from LBSU. i will apologize for not remembering that. everything was centered around the big 12 in all the conversations and i guessed wrong.

Gee, that sounds familiar. Kinda like a team that lost 11 or their last 16 and 7 of their last 9. Does McD have the greatest basketball resume in the country? Probably not, but it's certainly more impressive than Morgan's before he was hired, and I'm actually optimistic about the future of ISU basketball. I have no expectations of ISU having a winning record this season, but McD is taking over the rubble of a program in decline, especially with the losses of Stinson and Blalock. I'm going to give the coach a couple years to try and turn around the program before I make judgements.
 
I think that we have forgotten that WM only brought 3 four star recruits to Ames during his tenure. Blalock, Clark, and Taggart. I think we can all agree Taggart was not a legit four star recruit. So who's to say any of the guys that were to come this next year were legit or not? I guess they could be. I myself am glad Westbrook is not showing up. I would have liked to seen Stinnet, but oh well. I guess my point is it doesn't matter if we get WM recruits if you like getting smoked by Baylor with 3 supposed NBA players on your team. Let's give McD a chance and burn him if in three years we have players declaring for the draft, but losing to Mid Majors and not making the NCAA.

No we can't agree that taggs was not a legit 4 star. He was as legit as they come. Ranked highly by every publication. The problem is that people like you expect him to come in and dominate right away and frankly that rarely happens. I have said it before he was hurt and sick before the season started. In addittion to thatI can only think of 5 recent cyclones that have been as good as him as a frosh, and only one of those was a big man. But apparently you know more than the scouts that ranked him, calipari, and everyone else associated with college basketball. He "only brought 3 4 stars", uh how many did we have in the 10 years prior? Maybe 2.
 
With the hype that WM gave him in the preseason, I did expect him to play better than he did. I realize he had illness problems which slowed his development, however, he didn't live up to the preseason hype that WM heaped on him. Even after his recovery from early physical problems, he was a major disappointment. Homan played much more solidly his freshman year and he was maybe a 2-star. Heck Marsden outplayed Taggert last year and he didn't get even one fourth the hype.

When you consider how much WM overhyped his recruits, it makes me wonder how good they really are. I remember the Ken Trickey era well. You obviously don't. Andrew Parker, Julian Butler, and another frosh were supposed to be the best in the country. We won three games that year. The overhype destroyed Julian Butler and the other frosh. Andrew Parker finally did develop into a decent player, but certainly not the future NBA all-star he was touted to become.

The numbers are not reflected in your opinion. Homan and marsden had worse freshman years. People get overhyped all the time. As I recall scoggland was supposed to be a dominator who was light on his feet. If you ever saw him run down the court you knew that wasn't true. Of course a coach is going to hype up his players/recruits, what do you want him to say "we have a new guy coming in, he's about average, may develop in to a nice practice player, may see a few minutes before senior night if he works hard"?
 
After a year sitting out as a redshirt in Memphis, Tags will prtobably weigh 260 frim eating all that bar-b-que Memphis style. Wait and see.
 
The point of Johnny Orr's teams scoring lots of points keeps coming up over and over in discombobulated's posts. Yes, they did score a ton of points, and yes, they were fun to watch. But, did they win on the road? Did they win a conference title? How many times did they get bounced from the NCAA's in the first round? I loved watching his teams play, but I loved it even more when TF's and LE's teams would go on the road and win in hostile environments instead of getting blown out like Johnny's teams did. Not to mention TF and LE won some titles and just a few NCAA games while they were here.
