I used to have one the summer before I started High School and I loved it. It is a great way to save some money. Check craigslist for them. You might even check into buying a cheap motorcycle too.

In 7 years I'll be 50, at that point I'll probably get one since it will have been over 35 years since my last one. And it will be a great way to embarrass my kids. But to your questions, I have no idea where one would purchase one.

I've seen some car dealerships that have some for sell. This was in Council Bluffs, but I'm sure some in Des Moines do as well.

The last time I looked there seemed to be two types. Your typical Honda, Kawsaki, Yamaha, and Suzuki. Various sizes but I think anything over 50 cc would require a motorcycle license.

There are also a bunch of POS korean(I think they are Korean) ones on the market that are real cheap. I wouldn't go there.

If you're going to buy a decent sized one you may as well just pick up a used Suzuki SV650 or DRZ400.

if you want to buy a moped because you want a moped, then go for it.
If you are going to not own a car and only drive a moped, then go for it.
If you are going to buy a moped to try saving money, do the math first. A decent moped is going to set you back $2000+. Sure you use less gas, but you are still using gas. I ran some nimbers a few years back when I had the same thought and found that the numbers didnt paint a good picture.

This.

I've done the same thing with fuel efficient cars as opposed to keeping mine and the $$$ isn't that big of difference.

I've owned a few mopeds in my day and currently own two vintage vespas. They're a blast and definitely great on gas. The thing you really need to watch out for when buying a moped is not to buy anything made in China. They are not built well, have tons of mechanical issues and look like hell. A great moped on the market now is the Sachs Mad ***. It looks stylish and hauls major ***. One can get a used Mad *** for under 2K. There are a few websites you can look on when looking for a used bike (in addition to Craiglist).

Good luck!

BTW...theyre pretty dangerous too. Not a lot of drivers look for you on them. Case in point: My brother got run over by one last week. Luckily he did more damage to the dumb *** and his minivan than it did to him. Either way, he wants a new one because he loves it so much. Fast and easy to get around on.

I love this thread. I was actually thinking about this very issue with the way gas has gone up, but I think the shame in being found riding one isn't worth it.
