Updated: Hall of Fame Official, Waterloo native Mike Allen, 74, has died
Allen is considered one of the most accomplished wrestling officials in history, and was the first African-American official to work the Iowa High School State Championships.

He was one of the nicest guys and best refs in wrestling!
Incredible high school administrator too.

He was a class ahead of me at Waterloo East High School. Excellent athlete - football, wrestling at least.
His brother, Willie, was a big, big powerful fullback. They were on East football squads that went undefeated for six years and won mythical state titles each year (a time before playoffs).
Mike was a class man. Met him once in Cedar Falls (just happened to recognize him) - nice short conversation. Mention to him, give me a call next time he will be in Ames, with a days notice. Took him to Maude’s. He spoke of the fun side of sports.
